7.62x39 upper

I don't know if I can help you other than to say buy the best one you can afford. I spent a big bunch of money on a custom built upper for 7.62x39 and still had to do some fiddling to get it to work well. Presumably you want it to shoot cheap ammo. So you definitely want a chromed bore. 7.62x39 is lower pressure than 5.56 so there's not really much benefit to a mid length gas system. Some times that can create reliability issues. Carbine is usually better. I had to fiddle with buffers to get it to function with both Czech and Chinese ammo as they are significantly different in pressure. I would advise buying an upper without bolt and then get an LMT enhanced 7.62x39 bolt from Questar. With "mil spec" style bolts, extractors and the locking lugs on the bolt are the weak spots. When I had a mil spec style bolt in mine I was breaking extractors every 800-1000 rounds. Eventually one of the locking lugs adjacent to the extractor on the mil spec style bolt will break. So far the LMT has been good to go with no issues for a couple cases of ammo to this point and I can't recommend it enough. If you can find a chromed bolt carrier or one with some other corrosion resistant coating that will be helpful in the maintenance aspect of keeping it clean and rust free.

Hope this helps.

I have the PSA 7.5" 7.62.39 complete upper it runs flawless but I have only shot factory brass out of it, no surplus

I have the same upper, also in 7.62x39. It's run flawlessly with a few different kinds of ammo, using the XCR pistol mags. Awesome little blaster. Only thing I'd prefer is mlok over keymod, but whatever. Photo shown with a 5.56 mag just because it looks cooler ;) I've debated putting it up on the EE as I rarely shoot it, but so far, I haven't been QUITE broke enough to need to part with it!

I've run ChiCom copper washed and Czech surplus through my 10.5" so far with no issues. Had one dud round of the ChiCom stuff in the first few hundred rounds but that's it. No light primer strikes with the standard Norc hammer spring, either. I'm running the XCR pistol mags the same as CobraGT is.

Do you clean the AR every time after shooting corrosive surplus? How dirty does it get?

I thought about getting an upper in 7.62x39, but it would end up doing similar functions as SKS, plus being more expensive and restricted FA.

If you clean it after each trip it should be fine.

There are 2 other options:

1) non-corrosive like Norinco ammo or Canada Ammo 7.62x39 repacked ammo (still cheaper than 223/556 unless there is a crazy sales)

2) Piston system like Adams Arms. It will blow your budget a bit but I am thinking about doing that down the road for the 7.62 upper

Yes I do. It isn't much of a chore on an AR, though. Run a couple wet patches through the bore, pull the BCG out and wipe it down with a cleaner that neutralizes the corrosive salts. I also live in central Alberta and it is stupid dry here most of the time. Often our humidity is so low that corrosion simply can't start. I see you are in New Brunswick, so you might have to be more diligent than I am.

There is simply no comparison between the AR platform and an SKS. I have both the SKS and a short barreled vz58 and they sit in the safe since I got the AR. I do at least 99.5% of my shooting at the range, so the restricted part means nothing to me.

have a PSA 10.5" x39 upper running on a Norc CQ-A lower with no issues. Sold by IRunGuns.

I have the same upper with about 500 rounds through it, running XCR pistol mags it eats everything I've put through it, not one failure yet.
Not sure about other brands but the PSA comes with an extended firing pin which helps light up the military hard primers.
Some will tell you that you need to run an increased power hammer spring but I haven't had to.

Only 7.62*39 Upper I've shot but it runs great so far and throws some wicked fireballs...just about as much fun as you can have with your pants on.

Is that a STANAG mag? I thought PMAGs were only AK type for 7.62 X 39

I've got a PWS and highly recommend you go this route - they've taken its operating system from the AK rifle with a long stroke piston system which I must say, having had a DI 7.62x39 gun previously, is just leaps and bounds better.
7.62 is dirty stuff, and it just never gets old seeing that the bolt & upper is free from any sort of fouling after a few hundred rounds. This, and its dead nuts accurate (it shoots frigging MOA with norinco white box stuff). I'm not exaggerating.

Mine currently has a vortex pst 2.5-10x32 which I think is a great choice for this set up. Will try to post a pic soon.

Interesting thread guys. I'm debating building 7.62x39 upper for a possible hog hunting trip in Texas... it would need to be a 16" barrel, if I'm not mistaken...

This is why I like my upper [one reason anyway]. I'll be retiring in a few years and plan to spend some winters in Arizona. I can take this AR there with no problem. My other two ARs have shorter barrels and I'll hit the NFA wall with those...

I have a PSA 7.62 10.5 upper. It started short stroking and FTE after a couple hundred roundish. I changed the carbine buffet for an h2 and it runs fine now. When I clean it I disassemble and hose it down with hot water then blow dry with compressed air.
