7.62x39 vs 30-30

Does the 7.62x 39 pack about as much punch as a 30-30? I've heard people say that. But I also heard the 7.62 was more like a .243. Your thoughts?

The 30-30's 170 grain round at 2200 fps and 150 grain at 2390 fps pack more punch than the commie round's 125 grain bullet doing 2300 fps.

It's still a handy little deer round tho.

At the muzzle is one thing. After 100 yards it's a different story.

I was assuming that if a 30-30 or 7.62x39mm was being used, past 100 meters didn't matter too much

My federal stuff is showin at 200 its a matter of picking fly poop from pepper. If I had to pick what was gonna do any better, I would think the heavier round with the higher SD.

-Wolf 154gr SP moves at 2104 fps with 1514 ft lbs @ muzzle and 897 @200 yds.
-Handloads for each cartridge will improve them both (of course!!!).

Pushing 210gr Berger's @ 2009 fps, or 240 gr Sierra Matchkings @ 1914 fps in a 7.62x39 sounds sounds way cool to me. Now if my SKS could do that...

Anyways, if you're hunting, there's no way the game will tell the difference between a 30-30 and a 7.62x39, no way.

Although the 123-125gr 7.62mm projectile has a marginally higher BC, the 30-30 produces more energy (both the 150 and 170gr bullets). Depending on what's dispensing it, the 30-30 is probably going to be a more accurate rifle. I'd take better accuracy any day (because a miss is a mystery). If you're hunting deer at 50yds or less, it won't make much difference - either can/will work. I've taken deer with both at these close ranges. I have also taken deer at 150yds with a 30-30 with authority and accuracy. An SKS just doesn't keep-up in the accuracy department.

So, 30-30 it is !!!
