7.62x39 XCR Conversion or CSA58?

5/8-24.

But take that with a grain of salt as I actually do own what I'm talking about and therefore can not be an expert on it.

Because a $12 pmag would be just too much for them to afford? So they made a whole new lower?

The cost of the mag has nothing to do with it. AKs are plentiful in the USA, many guys already have a few drawers full of AK mags....having an AR platform that shares a common mag with firearms you already own is the attraction to designing a whole new lower to accommodate these mags. It's called cross platform versatility.

I just think a person is better off running x39 in a rifle and mags that were actually designed for it, reliability will be much higher and a low cost rifle running corrosive ammo is a much more forgiving platform if the owner gets lazy on the cleaning. Do a bad job cleaning an XCR and you could be looking at a heafty bill to get it running again.
I feel the same about Norinco 5.56 ammo, why spend $2000-$3000 for a high end black rifle then feed it garbage. There have been so many threads started with guys having problems with it I can't believe anyone would still run it in anything other than an M-4gery.

In the end everyone is of course free to do what they want and this is just one guys opinion.

Both rifles in the subject of this thread were designed for 7.62x39, the XCR even has a long stroke gas piston operating system that is an almost exact copy of the AK47 system. Plagiarized for it's known reliability. Not all 7.62x39 is corrosive, there are plenty of manufacturers that offer very cheap non corrosive x39 ammo, Tula, MFS, Norinco, S&B just to name a few.

I agree with you again on Norinco 5.56, it is very consistent...consistently garbage.

I would get the Vz58 just because the conversion kit cost $750.
I love the XCR, but it is not worth to get the conversion kit for that price.

The price of the conversion is actually pretty fair considering a decent barrel will cost you around $400 and I think it comes with most of the gas system and a new shell deflector.
I dislike x39 for other reasons. Rob Arms needs to get the 300BLK rifles and conversions on the market.

Zuk,
You're right not all x39 is corrosive but just as we see with guys running $3000 AR's and feeding them Norinco 5.56 there are lot of people on here who are cheap when it comes to ammo and other than the low cost of x39 why would anyone want to run it? 223 will outperform it in almost every department and 6.8SPC will outperform it by a large marging in every department but price.

If I were the OP, I would look at 6.8 instead, shoot 223 for cheap fun and then swap to 6.8 for hunting and whatever else you want more thump for.

Since I have in the neighbourhood of 10K 7.62x39 I see no reason to go 6.8. Really ballisticlly it dosen't do much more than a 7.62x39. Robinson's kit comes with barrel, gas assembly and 5/10 mag. Looking at the CSA/Vz its going to be at least a $1000, plus a scope mount. The only reason I think I am waffling is because of the 2 dozen 5/30 Vz mags I have....mind you they could be sold on the EE. Thanks for the input everbody.
