All a matter of perspective..... Those guys dump more time and money into a sloppily chambered sub $200 surplus rifle than I care to.... But if they enjoy their hobby, then good for them.....

As to myself, I don't see the point in spending a truck full of cash and effort to make something almost as good as a finely machined bolt action hunting rifle..... Only to have a poor carry gun.....

I liken it to saying a Chevy Cruze is a perfectly capable off road vehicle within limitations...... Sure it could likely do some walking trails and "grass down the middle roads".....

In the end, if the SKS guys want a better response, they would be best to post in the milsurp forum and not the hunting and sporting one..... That is where the SKS belongs.....

The reason for the smart ass response is I CLEARLY said depends on what you are hitting and where you are hitting it. I DID NOT say deer at 200.

A x39 doing moa or better can be used for smaller problem animals at 200.

The op questioned why anyone would pay more for a 7.62 x 39 rifle that is not an SKS........ Maybe you missed that....

Unless you want to hunt within 50 yards or you hav the skeletal structure of John Meryk, the SKS is not a hunting rifle.....

This is the hunting rifle forum is it not?.....
 
At one time people said repeating lever actions weren't hunting rifles. Then later others said repeating bolt actions were not hunting rifles. Then once again later some other people said semi-auto rifles were not hunting rifles.... Etc....etc.... All rifles are hunting rifles. At least that's what each and every one of needs to think and support if we ever wish to have the freedom to choose with what we hunt.

That being said, I personally think the SKS, is a reliable POS and I can think of a few hundred other makes/platforms I would rather hunt with. As for the x39, it's a neat little round and someday I would like to own something like a CZ chambered for it.
 
I like the 7.62x39 it works grait on small deer
Wear I live a guy gets lots of opportunity so waiting for that perfect shot is no big deal but if I was living in a Area where deer is Limited or easily spooked from overhunting I would want something with a little more reach
Some guys only get one kick at the can

If you take it that a deers vitals are 6", you're still ok.
4-5 moa is probably what most average hunters are capable of off hand anyway.

BTW even the SKS can do better than 4-5" if scoped, and fed decent ammo. Mine can do 3" with little trouble, and no trigger mods.

In a bolt gun, the 7.62X39 can do quite well.
Just for fun, I checked, and Winchester lists a load for deer under the 7.62X39, but note, that they also list a deer load for the 22-250!

As i said, keep the range reasonable, and pick your shots. I did not define reasonable, because the shooter will have to determine that for his/herself, at the range.
