7.62x39

I own a russian sks, and a zastava in 7.62x39. Love them both but I bought the zastava at twice the price for twice the accuracy. I get about 6 moa groups with the sks with irons. And 3moa with the zastava with irons. Down to about 2 moa now I have a scope on the zastava. Shooting hornady ammo and lcw, both get great results. I can only imagine the cz527 is gunna be a 1 moa gun with match ammo. I've held but never shot the cz and the quality is much better than the zastava, and it is drilled and dovetailed, whereas you need to find scope mounts for the zastava. If you want a scope on an sks IMHO you need to drill and tap the receiver with a pu mount or similar. The zastava kicks less then the sks and weighs less even with the scope. Being able to afford to put 100's of rounds thru your gun is immensely valuable for a new shooter. Next purchase will be a .308 but zastava is fine for deer inside 300yards and sks is good fun to 200 yards. Took a deer with a bad shot at 25 yards with the zastava this year, but he spooked me and I had to aim down the barrel, did the job but not really a fair test cuz of bad aim.
 
The zastavas are a nice little tinkerer's gun. I got the m85 and it is definitely a diamond in the rough. I am debating hand loading the 7.62x39 to see what cartridge can do at longer ranges (i.e. 3-400 m) but like everything else it is on the "nice to do" project's list.
 
If I had an SKS, I would rather buy ammunition than spend $500 extra on a bolt action chambered in 7.62x39. If I wanted to hunt, then I would opt for a better cartridge. I wouldn't limit myself to less than 100yds.
 
Narrowing the price gap between an SKS and a more expensive bolt gun,I see canada ammo had a Zastava M85 in their 'bargain bin' for $399....it lacks a magazine spring and had a weak firing pin spring......given my druthers I'd opt for a 65x55 in an M85 ...but...had I not already had an SKS and a box of cheap ammo I'd be tempted to buy the bargain bin M85 and look for a couple of springs...
 
I noticed that skokie does all his deer hunting with a Win. 92 in .44 magnum, many deer hunters use something similar. Why are these hunters
doing this? What are they getting out of these lower powered cartridges so that they don't bother with 30-06? The challenge? Easier?

Not wanting to incite a discussion about a truly under-powered cartridge like .22LR!
 
I know an old FN guy that ONLY uses a 22 and has taken a lot of bucks with head shots,he gets close ,takes a rest and puts one right behind the eye...

I can see that being done for a few good reasons by someone who does a good job of it, I guess I have always assumed that .22lr deer hunting
was done by kids out for a hoot and shoot. There may be a sense of connection for that fellow in getting close and not wasting anything, meat or ammo.

You might be surprised how many elephant have succumbed to the 7.62X39 from AKs...........it is the poachers choice in Africa and has been used for decades to kill elephants. Of course humane doesn't enter the equation.........they like to knee shoot them then finish them off at their leisure with full auto bursts into the body and back of the head.

I'm aware of it. It takes lots of poachers, lots of AK's. Just like arrows and Bison.

Nope .... it will go the other direction. Deer hunting with a rifle is for pussies.

Hang out on a tree branch in a loin cloth with a knife in hand. When unsuspecting deer walks under you jump down onto its back, slit its throat and hang on for couple minutes.

Thats nothing..... check out the insanity of jewish shechita slaughter. Halal ain't got nothing on this. You should be far more concerned about Noahide laws being forced on you.
