i could be i am on an intesely harsh budegt if i want to do anything i ahveN,t had full time work since i broke my arm getting close to 5 months ago now and the damn thing is still healing so its down to evey peny counts right now but more then likely i won't take it out hunting this year i probably won't even get to get out hunting this year the way its goin right now just nice to know the limmits if i do decide thanks
 
obviously I was being a smartass Hawkeye, I guess if its all you got honestly 75 yards maybe if its a good accurate one, better to ask some of the guys from the area to maybe help you out and go with them, maybe even borrow a shooting iron that shoots :D
 
oh i know i knew it was coming even before i posted this thread :D i was just giving my situation i am in the process of acquiring a scope for mine as i cann't get the sights to drift to bring the zero on target i was told that its ballistically very simular to the 30 30 so i was figuring that it owuld be effrective to the same range as one and since my sks is quite i bit cheaper them my 30 30 i was thinking of using it after i got my first with my 30 30(my fist rfile)
 
30-30 is a awsome deer rifle specialy in close ranges and a million times more accurate than a sks IMHO , I would use the 30-30 for deer and the sks as a shooting rest :lol:

30-30 ammo is cheap to $20 a box is cheap trust me :D
 
with 125 gr. soft points, it should work if you limit your shots to 150 yards and closer, better yet 100 yards.

7.62x39 is closer to .357mag out of a Winchester 94 than it is to the 30/30.......
 
I am in the process of loading for 7.62 X 39 for the CZ 550. I need to achieve 1740 ft lbs of muzzle energy here in the UK to make it legal for deer! I know it is achievable, I would also prefer to use IMR 4895. I have plenty of the sierra 125 grain soft points in .311. I have started to load those in my 303. I just want a good lightweight woodland close up calibre and this fits the bill!
 
OneBarfly is right I have tried Norinco and federal 125gr softpoints into wet newspaper and both came apart . the federal was the better of the two the jacket was about 1.5 inches behind the core, so it just about held up to the end. If one can find a bullet that performs and an accurate rifle to shoot it out of I think the 7.62x39 would make a fine brush gun.
 
My father just dropped a Deer with a Norinco jw-103 Bush Ranger 7.62x39 at about 200 yards. It was a 158 pound 8 pointbuck before field dressing.
One shot to the shoulder, droped him stone dead. From what I know he used Winchester 123 gr. SP rounds.
 
On the cheap a good mosin91/30 or 91 in 7.62X54R is a better deer rifle that will give you 300 yards of range or more(depending on the shooter). I have had good luck with bell ammo, but now i reload for my mosins.

Just yesterday I killed 2 coyotes with my fin m91 One coyoted beded down on a hilside at 200 yards... and one running in a feild at 160 yards or so.

I have had good luck with this rifle so far... besides yesterday I have shot a fox at 150yards ... a deer running at 170yards and another deer standing at 30yards(in the neck). All one shot kills... and I have only ever missed one thing with this rifle and it was a coyote at about 70 yards.. and it was an offhand shot. Also I have a polish m44 that I have shot 2 deer with both standing shots at around 100yards. one was an offhand shot, and the other a rested shot. I Take my 91 out more now because the blast from the m44 means i must wear ear plugs in the field.

But if you can't hit a standing deer(in the vitals) with an sks at 150yards or less with a rest than there is something wrong with you or your sks... I also have a yugo 59/66, and handload for this caliber... but have yet to try it out on deer. it groups 3" 5shots at 100yards. I have tryed some wolf hollow points out of a chinese sks on deer... but on both deer i shot the bullet just tumbled sideways... both animals droped on the spot... but I did not like how the bullets preformed so i stoped with that.

Still healing at 5months? There has to be something wrong... my brother broke his arm right in half about 3" from the wrist and it was good to go in 1.5months. Hopefully you get that in order soon.
 
Yeah it was a very severe break i was incredable close to needing surgury i was close to a month before the bones really started fusing to gether right now i am waiting for the bones to be come solid again it takes 5 to 6 months for the bones to solidify after a break like that. I also have a polish m44 but the problem with that rifle is there is no where locally i can get anthing other then milsurp ammo for it my 30 30 will be my primary deer rifle when i finnaly do get out to try hunting but i was curious bout my sks and wanted some opinions as to whether it owuld be a ethical choice i know my personal ablitities behind a rifle are up to par imo but down from where i was when i was competing with cadets and for long range shooting i have had the oppertunity tp shoot with the bcra out to 600m
