Just a pondering thread. But how many years do you guys think we have before it dries up or we cant import it anymore. And then 10 years down the road we'll see the 1200 round crates for sale for 500$ and we'll say to ourselves I remember when I used to only pay 200$ or maybe it will never happen. So all this getting to my point. HOW MUCH do you keep on hand? Crates or round count.

I grew up shooting .303 that my Dad bought when he was in his twenties. You have to buy it when it's available or, like you said, you'll pay the price later on. I'd like to have enough so my grandkids and I can go blast away. My oldest is 12 right now.;)

The Czech ball might keep coming for 10 years. Or it might end in 6 months due to gov't interference. That's the risk of using surplus, you just can't say when it will end.

I don't think in round count or cases. I think in years of shooting.

With the amount of SKS's sold out there & looking back at 303, 7.62X51 ammo. The way NRCAN changes their regulations. I would estimate that in 2 years time there will be a shortage. The price has already gone up in both the wholesale & retail markets since last year. In this industry, buy when it's there because you never know when it will be gone.
Just like Canam's cheap handguns & 7.62X51 surplus.
That's my opinion.

Read this thread to see what guys used to pay for ammo.

I would like to be at that, Iam sitting at a crate and a half, With only 1 gun to feed,

Man, I'd get the shakes if I only had 1500 rounds on hand. 4 of us went together and got 10 crates shipped in this week. Got an excellent price and great service from Trade Ex.

I'm still kicking myself for only buying 3 cases of 7.62 Nato when it was $300/1000. I won't make that same mistake with 7.62x39.

I don't even have a gun that shoots 7.62x39 :( I plan on picking up an SKS(maybe 2) with at least 2400-3600 rounds of ammo within a year from now though. I want to stock up on the surplus before it's all gone like the .303 and .308 stuff of the past. I was to young to get in on that stuff but not the x39's.

I've got 2 1120 crates sitting next to my bed, one has a few hundred taken out so far but the other is still waiting to be opened. What little money I make usually goes to necessities, and ammo isn't one of them, so as much as I'd like to have crates stacked all along my wall it just isn't going to happen

I'm surprised that the surplus ammo is still available, considering how popular the SKSes are. Only have 1 crate which makes me feel uneasy.

I think the saving grace is that the US does not seem to be that interested in the X39, which of course means more for the rest of us!

They're interested, they just can't have the Czech M43 surplus. Since AK pistols became common the BATFE classified steel-core 7.62x39 as armour-piercing handgun ammo making it non-importable.

If this stuff was allowed in the US, we'd probably see very little of it and what we did see would be much higher priced. The Canadian 7.62x39 market is a drop in the bucket compared to the US.

I dont think the supply of 7.62x39 will "dry up" unless the Chinese or Russians go to war (or some other large country with lots of AK's and who will buy it from either country).

True.. You may not see the old surplus stuff from the 70's anymore... but, theres the stuff from the 80's, then there will be the stuff from the 90's... Even if that were to all dry up... The Russians and Chinese are still cranking out 7.62x39 by the boat loads... And that's the crap I've been buying.

As I see it... You see ammo supply's "Dry up" when the guns are no longer being used as much as they once were OR because the guns are being used in War.... I.E., the .303 which someone already mentioned... I would guess that you dont see a lot of .303 surplus anymore because it was replaced by 7.62 NATO.

I would say that 7.62 NATO has started to dry up because of the war.

7.62x39 Isn't being used in any massive volume right now... There are millions of guns still in warm hands right now that use it... The Russian's and Chinese are still making good money off of it... It will be worth while to keep manufacturing and selling...

Just my $0.02...

Then again... I'm looking at the market from a completely different POV.

I bought a crate when i bought my sks. I have 90 shots left.

I just ordered an arma-coated cz 858 and so i stopped off at ellwood-epps and grabbed another case. (they had a tag for 179.99 but apparently it was an "old tag") 199.99.

I want to buy a case for my jeep, and leave it in there, but i dont even know if thats legal???

Btw i love this round. Its so much fun to shoot and you can waste so much cause its so cheap :D

What little money I make usually goes to necessities, and ammo isn't one of them, so as much as I'd like to have crates stacked all along my wall it just isn't going to happen

+1
This is a site for gunNUTZ. So the norm here is a desire for most. It's more important to get your priorities right first. As for the main topic, 7.62x39mm surplus will dry up. It's in the definition of surplus. 7.62x39mm itself won't be going anywhere for some time, though.

I have/had 3 full cases and half way through another. I stumbled across a case of 93 vintage at Le Baron so I snapped that one up. So I have over 5000 rds. I will probably buy again when I get down to 3 full crates.
On a side note I just ordered 2 cases of 7.62x54R and I don't even own a gun that fires it yet.
