dammit, i knew this crap would happen as soon as i bought a sks....
Yes but relatively speaking, it's still cheap ammo.
Epps still had some cases last week, but now minus a few...

This has all happened in the past.
This is a total rerun. I've watched this happen a dozen times in the last 35 years. I keep telling people to stock up, not just because its cheap, but because it runs out. Maybe in ten years I'll let a few cases go out, at 5 or 6 times what I paid.
For those that snoozed, you loozed ! Pay attention next time. Sometimes it hurts to pry the wallet wide open, but if you don't, you will run out of ammo. Perhaps when ammo is 300-400 bucks a case like X54R, we will think about the times we were complaining when it was $160/case.
Stop panicking. x39 is the most popular centerfire cartridge in the world by far. The prices will go up, that's a given. But it wont "run out". Not for a LONG time.
25cents per shot is far from cheap.
Sorry for the hijack, but what calibre do you think will be the NEXT cheap surplus round?
The majority of surplus will never be allowed into the country because of NRCAN rules, which means we could be stuck with buying NEW ammo.
It's not a question of what is the most popular cartridge, it is at what price we can get it IN CANADA.

There are political reasons why all the Czech x39 is being dumped in Canada which I'm not gonna get into.
Cheer up everybody! I hear x39 is going to be sold for around $180 a crate!... Of course the crate only has 800rnds in it now...
Buy what you can... Take a second on the house and fill the garage, you will do better in 5yrs then any GIC.
What "political" reasons? It has NOTHING to do with politics, (other than they are a member of NATO and selling to another NATO country is OK rather than destroying old ammo). They simply had ammo available at the RIGHT PRICE, and approvable.
A few years ago our friends at BATF decided to classify 7.62x39 as a "pistol cartridge" because some companies made an AK "Pistol" (which actually was a carbine without a stock, so that it doesnt fall under SBR class). All AP pistol ammo is banned in USA.
Of course Czech M43 is not AP, but it does have a mild steel core in the bullet and it was enough for the boys at BATF to call it "AP". So they banned the import of it along with all other abundant x39 that happened to have a mild steel core.
That's how #1 customer for their ammo was eliminated. The Czechs, being in NATO probably didn't want to sell it to guerrilla armies, so Canada was their next logical choice.
Make no mistake about it - ALL good surplus goes to USA first. We MIGHT be lucky enough to get some leftovers at double the price. In case of Czech M43, we got super lucky because BATF banned the import of it. Of course, if it went to US they'd be paying $70 a crate...
Since this ammo WAS produced is in batches, that means the importer must buy a lot of it and submit it for approval as a batch. No point going through the approvals if a year from now that batch of ammo isn't available for purchace.
An importer doesn't need to apply for NRCAN approval for every single shipment they bring in. Once approved, all ammo of exact same specs is good to go. If the manufacturer is reputable, and claims that the new "batch" is EXACTLY the same as the old one (which was approved), it's still good to go.
Lots of the "surplus" ammo isn't approvable because of mercury or other "deleterious" compounds in the cartridge. This has happened and the purchaser/importer has had to sell that ammo in another jurisdiction (USA).
Also, the packaging of that ammo must comply with NRCAN criteria. That means no cases or even 20 round boxes of loose cartridges (the cheap Brown Bear ammo in the US you are speaking of), again driving up the price.
So yes, there is lots of ammo, just at what price. The MFS steel cased ammo is new production, but would be around $500 a case for x39 (based on 223 and 308 pricing).
I never said the price wont go up. It surely will. I just said that as long as there are 1000's of hungry SKS's around, there will likely be cheap ammo for them (cheap compared to newly manufactured commercial ammo). But yeah, days of $120-200 crates are gone for good.
So under what name the Uly ammo approved as?
Dont remember, but im certain that Chris (CanAM) said it was approved in one of his posts a few months ago. I'll try to find it.
Some Lapaua rimfire is produced in the same factory as Wolf, yet Wolf rimfire isn't approved.
Wolf ME is sold in Canada under other names, so its not really worth the hassle for them to go through the approval process just to sell it under "Wolf" name.
NRCAN can suck my balls.
