So I'm in the market for a 7.62x39mm bolt action, so I can "borrow" the Mrs ammo. And just have something light and pleasant to grab out of the safe, possibly for deer a little further down the road when my son is old enough.

So far all I've found is the Savage Scout and the CZ 527 carbine. Any of you fellow nutz know of any others?

I'm not looking to spend big bucks (700$ish) and my preference would be for iron sights.

I've been considering the TOZ-122 as well but that would be with reduced recoil ammo.

Savage makes another rifle in 7.62x39, it's the 10fcns I believe. Check out the PDF for the 2011 catalogue, you'll see it. They just started offering this.

I shot a Norinco bushmaster 7.62x39, It has a nice action, but everything else is average. It shot a little under 2 inches with S&B factory brass ammo at 100y. I'd hunt with one, but I'd take the Savage over it without even having handled one before.

Yeah I do.

Re: bush ranger. I'm iffy on norinco, lots of stuff coming out of China seems to have QC problems and I would rather spend the extra on a Savage or Ruger.

I've noticed that Savage gets consistant praise for accuracy.

Yeah, the box mag is a big selling point but the Savage comes with better sights.

I'd hardly qualify them as better, however if you're looking for a rear peep sight apparently NECG is going to be offering a one similar to the one they offer for the CZ550.
