ok gents.
just back in from a sit an wait venture on private property.
So hear me out, i took along the 7,62 x 39 to try get some content of it shooting more of the larger Deer, being the sambar.
i got in nice arvo about 4-4:30pm an walked in just under a K to not spook any of the kangaroos out in the paddock already.... it was quite a on an off rainy, windy and cold day so i knew the deer would want to be feeding.... but didnt know how the wind would play out...
i got to a higher point but not top of the hill, about 250m out from the fence line an began glassing the thick scrubby hillside.... eventually closer to the sun down i picked up a small family group of 3 sambar , in the black berry making there way down very slowly.
i know they proberly wouldnt make the paddock by dark- but i was prepared for this.
ive recently been given a thermal smart phone (agm) and also more recently a Oneleaf Infared setup that i just use as a monocular at the moment---- i had camera on tripod, an these two weapons sitting out of the Bag ready for darkness.
to my suprise, as soon as darkness Fell, deer literally scrambled out of the 1 kilometer fringe i could see, an joined the Roos , i seen 3 out before "dark" , but then the flood gates opened.
im the sole "legal" shooter of this place, an a few poach it now an then but its quite an effort--- i hit quite a few deer over the year but know there is many more in there, Since there has been no cattle for 2 weeks now, i knew i had to spend more time there!
i shot a Stag with the 7mm08 2 evenings before with my girlfriend in tow-- right in the corner of the block, so i knew the other deer would now funnel elsewhere--- so i staked it out tonight.
after a while i was getting cold in the wind an figured i better do something now or just walk back out an maybe come back before light tomorow morning---
i packed up most of my stuff but had the infrared monocular, an thermal phone to scan the locations of the deers- which by now were about 250-300m below me, an about 400-500meters out of the bush line! they just kept coming.
i snuck down and got to what i think was about 100meters an used my exo bag as a rifle rest- i knew i would have to be quick but i was keen to roll atleast one for meat harvest-
so with the 7.62x39 snug in my shoulder, an a Torch in my foreend arm under the rifle, i lit them up an had quite a few looking quite alarmed , looking at me !
pow- wack.
i took the gun down an sat there a moment...
grabed the thermal phone an scanned..... to my suprise, deer standing around everywhere still!!!
back up wit hthe gun an torch on the pack, a young deer this time.. pow- wack. it runs toward me an expires!
i see one on the way back to the bus han think, well, why not stretch her legs- pow - - maybe a wack! deer dances an retreats to the bush line!
ok i gather my stuff after a few minutes, maybe 5 minutes gone by now- an go check out the other deer i have shot in front of me.... i light up the paddock an hekka, there is still deer feeding within 200m of me!?
maybe the small crack of the little 7,62 ? with the wind direction.... an lack of hunting pressure!
i light up some Stags- WTF!? they are just lookin at me!?
hinds in the open paddock... unsure what to do....
i had 2 rounds left, So i upped one into the chamber an rest off a log- pow- wack she runs off an slows up about 80 meters away and slips over a rise out of sight.....
the stags still lookin like WTF is goin on!?
very unsual.
anyway, i check the deers and pack my rifle onto my backpack an begin to walk back to the ute--- ill be back at the crack of dawn in the morning to retrieve the meat!
i pass several kangaroos an even more hinds way out in the open by now!!
cant believe it.
i guess the deer are lucky that i didnt have my 19 loaded rounds with me, i only grabbed 5 X 150gr speer loads as i left the vehicle!!
their lucky day.
certainly need a thin out to a degree, but happy with my haul- keen for the meat an to divvy it out to some friends!!
will grab some photos tomorow an hopefully some Projectiles!
s could
it is worth noting that apart from the yearling, the rest of the deer were mostly Mature hind Sambar deer, an they seemed to need 2 shots to kill in most instances? - an thu be placement issue on my behalf- but i will confirm the placements tomorrow as once the 2nd was in the lungs they would go a short distance an fall quite ill an topple over-
im yet to find the one in the bushline from distance...... an the one that crest the ridge..... but am confident both will not be far away.
except some photos here tomorow morning gents.
i did film alot of the day time stuff, so will make some kind of video - the night time stuff- an post it up at some point too!
hmmmmm.
might go back with the 7-08 though for a early morning run an see if the stags are stil out!
