I received some IVI brass and cleaned it all up. I will be shooting it out of my Norinco M305 Build Up.

-The Projectiles are Berger: Match Grade 155.5 Grain. Designed for 1:12 Twist Rate which this rifle is.
-CCI 200. Large Rifle Primers

In regards to using Military Brass, I have read consistently; Drop the powder load 10% or 1 grain and work from there.

Currently I am using CFE-223 at 49.5 grains in my normal Commercial Brass. Straight from Hodgdon's website as the min load.

I was thinking of switching to 4895. Seems to be the popular choice for the M14/M1A.

Who else is using IVI or LC Brass and what are they using for Powder and Powder Loads?

I drop 2 grains when switching from commercial to IVI cases.

The M14 will cycle with as little as 25 grains of powder, so don't be shy about dropping 5 grins and doing a quick survey of 5 shots each in 0.5 gr increments to see if there is an accuracy sweet spot.

My rule of thumb, as stated above, is to drop your charge by 5% or 2 grains. your 10% would be 4 grains, not 1... Why are you using match grade bullets in a Norinco M305?

If I'm working up a new load from scratch, I just start at the normal starting load. It's well under max pressure so I'm not too concerned. Once in a while I'll find a node experimenting slightly below start values but it's usually in the first 1/3 to 1/2 of the normal load range.

I wouldn't waste match bullets in IVI brass or in a Norinco. Even in a rifle capable of consistently shooting 3/4 MoA groups with Lapua brass, I've never managed to get IVI brass to shoot better than around 1-1/4 MoA. There always seems to be flyers. I've tried to work up loads for 3 different Norinco M14's now and the best loads ranged from 2-6 MoA depending on which rifle. There's ways to improve accuracy in them but I gave up and sold mine.

Tac and 2520 ...from what I read in some books work really well.....well I have the western powder handloading guide ...if you need data ...send me a pm with your email and I’ll forward the info

Check this out, useful stuff:

Agreed, match bullets in a pie plate accuracy gun is a waste.

What year is the brass from? That will make a difference too. In 5.56mm I know anything past 2010 has a similar spec to commercial brass. 7.62 could also be similar, but I cannot confirm.

depends on what kind of ivi .308 brass you're using, regular general purpose stuff is pretty much crap, but the stuff i use tons of is match .308 ivi which was originaly loaded with 168SMK's,i can easily make a bunch of case that weigh within.5 of a grain of each other.

So 7.62 load is only 50 000 psi.......funny thing is that my fnar in 7.62...is nice and accurate and smooth recoiling .....but the velocity is like really low???. 20” heavy barrel.......
And when I go to 308 leadings (ya I know )......the gun has to be at max loads to be accurate again ?.
Kick like a son of a donkey ....Jesus h Christ
Any one else have the same problem?

7.62 NATO and 308 Win have very similar pressure limits.

For a given bullet the 7.62 will be slightly slower because heavier brass has less powder capacity.

The 50,000 psi limit you see for NATO is actually 50,000 CUP - a different measuring system. Both 308 and 7.62 have a limit around 62,000 psi.

Wow, all the hate for IVI really surprises me. I've found that in my M14 its just great. I once tested it for how many times I could reload this brass. I gave up after 15 reloads. Granted the rims were somewhat battered but no neck splits or head separations. IMHO, its as good as Lake City which is very well regarded by shooters down south. I recently did an accuracy work up for my accurized M14. If you're interested go here: https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/1826049-M14-range-report
