7.62x54 "Mexican Match" - anyone done it?

Hey, folks.

Took delivery yesterday of 440 rds of Tula manufactured 1975 era 7.82x54R. Steel cases, Berdan primed.

Has anyone tried the Mexican Match process with this ammo? I have to think the steel cases might be an issue...

Why would you think that there would be a problem? Pull out the steel jacket, seat your preferred bullet. I do it constantly with 7.62x39mm ammo with no ill effects. I used to do this for a friend about 10 years or so ago. Probably did 200 rounds or so. Took out the 150gn and and replaced it with Hornady 150gnSP. Not sure how many deer he has taken with it, it was his only hunting rifle then and still is.

The hardest part is to pull the bullet.... It's easier if you PUSH the bullet slightly with seating die to break the seal before actually pulling it out.
I've done it with 7.62x39 and x54, steel cased surplus.

Keep in mind, changing bullets (and/or powder) doesn't make it less corrosive.

Once you’ve pulled the bullets, dump the powder and re-measure. Powder weights can vary greatly in east block factory ammo

I have made lots of Mex-Mtch with steel cases. The steel is elastic, so neck sizing is not needed.

Champfering the case mouth is hard on the tool. I have now skipped that step.

When I make Mex match all I do is make sure that the new bullet weight is the same as or very very close to the weight of the pulled surplus bullet. Then re assemble the round to a similar OAL and you're good to go.
