Hi all,
Just wondering if 7.62x54r ammo is as hard to get as i would imagine it to be?
Is it readily available in gun shops?

If you're in Nova Scotia, the army navy store on Agricola street in Halifax has some Czech Corrosive and Sellier and Bellot SP ammo. Or you could do like I do, and order it off the internet. Frontier Taxidermy has some.
 
Surplus Czech 7.62x54mm is currently being imported into Canada. Usually around $250 for an 800rd crate (plus taxes + shipping).

Surplus is still fairly easy to get, typically in cases of 800 or so for $280 (I think that's the last number I saw). Beware, ordering soft point commercial ammo will bend your pocket book over the table, I ended up paying $79.18 for 40 rounds of Privi Partizan.
 
Thanks guys, i was eyeing a Mosin Nagant and dont want to dig myself into somewhere i dont want to be financially.
 
Ammo can be sourced at most gun shows, prices vary but milsurp is usually available. The caliber is sort of rare on regular hunting-oriented gun shop's shelves however.
 
Always available at gun shows. Usually about $1 per stripping clip. If you locate some Hungarian Light Ball surplus ammo, the wedge shaped cardboard boxes prepackaged the ammunition in 5 round stripper clips.

The stripper clips are very efficient, and do not require you to load them in any "rim under rim" sequence like the Lee Enfield. The interrupter in the magazine permits smooth loading without rim over rim hang ups.
 
Beware that rim over rim becomes an even worse issue using soft points as the round is shorter and has a habit of missing the feed path, causing the round to do funny things in the magazine.
