7.62x54R for hunting

I agree also, but...obvious question, where does that put solids?

:)Watching this thread, I've had similar questions and was wondering when that aspect would come up. About the only rationale I came up with, and 'in my estimation only' would be perhaps in Africa where deep penetration and bone breaking ability on some of the 'bigger stuff' is needed. It would probably be more appropriately answered by someone that's been there and used solids.

Hardest part is probably finding decent quality hunting ammo if you are not into reloading. Winchester, Hornady, S&B, and Norma make good stuff, just sourcing it can be an issue. I wouldn't use Prvi or any of the Russian stuff personally.

PRVI is some of the best commercial ammo on the planet and has better brass the S&B (ie;more loads). I'm not sure where you get your information from? If you don't want to load your own premium rounds, PRVI is the way to go. North American ammo in this caliber is loaded very light compared to what it is capable of firing.

Im going to reload for hunting ammo, likely with 180 grain .311 Sierra pro hunters bullets.

.311 works well, but I don't have a mosin, svt40, m38, or m44 that doesn't shoot better with a .312 bullet. I slug all my mosin barrels and you almost have to ask with such a big difference if these barrels are even the same caliber. All in all, best groups are always with a .312 bullet. I prefer Hornady.

I got my information first hand.... From shooting that garbage. Tried PRVI in 6.5x55, .308, and 30'06. All the soft point variety, all shot terrible with the 6.5x55 being the worst coming in at 5"+ at 100m. I don't even find the brass to be any good, primer pockets are loose and deeper then any N/A brass I ever loaded for. Literally the worst factory ammo I have ever seen or used to date....
For comparison, the 6.5x55 I have prints like this at 100m with iron sights and my handloads.

the mosin is a great gun my issue was once i put on a scope my POI was way off an had to use burris signuture rings to pull the windage settings in so i could zero ... probley gun smith error on that was pissed but i figured out a solution but my mosin was cheap untill it became my project gun i know most guys would say why did you put all that money it i just ask them why you got that rust bucket car in your yard that you are wanting to fix up ? i have put on scope mount, vortex diamond back 3-9x44, archangelstock, timmy trigger next on the list is upgrading to a heavey barrel an muzzle brake ..

I dropped a deer no problems at 240 ish yards last year looking to get a moose sometime with it next

Get the right sight post for it, not great to have to correct for the sights being way off when you've got a buck in range. The cartridge will do fine for anything short of bison or the big bears...it has a bit more power than a .308 and a lot more than your old 30-30.

Or take it one step further and shoot 203gr LVE soft points. Has no problem to drop almost any animal on the spot, Although you need to adjust your irons a bit.

I used my Mosin exclusively last year and had a lot of fun hunting with it. I used the Sellier and Bellot 180 grain softpoint load which worked very well on the three Whitetails I shot, all three shots being pass through with obvious signs of rapid expansion. I bought my ammo from Grouse River in BC and the customer service and shipping was great. I would highly recommend them and this load if you want to hunt Deer with your Mosin.
