My understanding is firearms chambered for rimfire cartrages, such as .22L, do not have magazine restrictions; unlike centrefire cartridges.

If rimefire magazines have unrestricted capacity under Canadian law, then why does the SVT-40, chambered in 7.62x54R ("R" stands for "rim"), have a pin installed in the mag to limit it to 5 rounds?

I visited crappy tire this weekend and visually confirmed that the mag is limited to 5.

Can someone please explain this quandary to me?

Thank you.

SVT mags are semi auto centerfire mags. Hence pinned to 5.

The 7.62x54r is a rimmed cartridge that is centerfired. Not a rimmed cartridge that is rim fired.

As far as the ammo goes it is all about where the primer is. In the primer pocket, or built into the rim of the cartridge.

Magazines for semi auto centerfired rifles are limited to 5 rounds. Magazines for centerfired manual actions have no limit. Pistol mags are limited to 10 rounds regardless of centerfire or rimfire. Rimfire rifle mags are unlimited, rimfire pistol mags are limited to 10.

It is about what the mag was originally designed for as well, not what it happens to fit in.

I think you are confusing rimfire with rimmed. Rimfire cartridges like the .22 long rifle contain the priming compound within the rim of the cartidge. That's why when you look at a fired 22 case, it has a dimpleon the edge of the rim. Centerfire cartridges have the primer in the centre, at the rear of the cartidge case, hence the term centerfire. The R in 7.62 x 54R stands for Rim. It just means that the case is rimmed. The primer is still in the center. It's the same with the 303, 30/40 Krag and a few others. 30-06, 308 etc are rimless cartridges.

Another CGN "Barrack Room Lawyer" who thinks he's found a loophole.

I don't take legal (or "life") advice from CGN - I go directly to the legislation. That's good advice for anyone.
