Has anybody heard of this being done? I have been looking into straight wall cases. There is something nice and basic about straight walled, even if there's a slight taper, they just seem so rudimentary yet get the job done. I was looking at necking up a 30-06 however the lack of a shoulder would mean head spacing on the neck. Which brings me to that venerable Russian round. Given the huge rim to headspace on I was just wondering if anyone has played with stretching the neck to fit a huge bullet thereby making a somewhat straight walled cartridge.

No but not much of one fwiw the Mosin Nagant has been re-barreled to both 45-70 and .444 Marlin + action work.

The one issue I see with straight wall cartridges is how sensitive they can be to seating depth.

Find the right diameter pill and you can neck up anything till its straight walled. Probably need something around 40cal for the 7.62x54r?

The only limitation to how far you want to neck up the X54R case will be the largest diameter of the case, in front of the rim.

I haven't done one personally but I've seen it done with 30/40 Krag cases and 303 Brit cases. One of the rifles I greatly admired was done on a No1 action by Elwood Epps back in the 70s. He did it while working in the Yukon from what I can remember. It was opened up to 44 cal and the barrel was around 20 inches long. He had modified the magazine to hold four cartridges in a straight line and opened up the rails to allow trouble free feeding.

I never got to shoot it but did get to fondle it. It was well balanced and very handy. Perfect for the purpose he built it.

I asked him WHY he didn't just go with the 444 Marlin?? His answer as a wink and a scowl. Mr Epps loved to experiment as much as he loved Lee Enfields.

The largest necking up I recall was something like 10.5X54 or the like. The Finns in paricular have done with the 54R what we did with the 303, so someone has done it. IIRC either Sako or Norma used to sell basic 54R(53R) brass that wasnt necked.

For a brief period the Finns couldn't privately own military calibers hence the wildcatting. Many 1895's in 7.62x54R became 9.3x54R for moose and boar.

You would have to check but I believe 9.3x57 data can be used in the 9.3x54R

Too bad there isn't much 9.3x57 data out there! Lol

Most guys are using stuff they found online, or improvising with stuff like 358win max loads as a starting point - at least that's the impression I've gotten from liberal reading on the interwebz in preparation for the husky sitting in my locker.
