7.62x54r bullets, .311(.312) or .308? The Lee manual says that all the loads were developed with .308 bullets. Has anyone compared the two for accuracy? I believe the factory diameter of a Mosin bore to be .310 but I don't want to spend $30.00 on a box of 30cal when I could have spent the money on some .311's or Hornady .312's

Another thing I was wondering was the quality of PRVI brass. I have 20 pieces of 7.62x54r hunting ammo that I paid $29.99 for and I'd like to reload them. I know the Mosin is a ####-on-open bolt so it shouldn't have as much of a headspace issue as an Enfield, but I'm curious how hot I should work my loads up to. The brass comes pre-annealed, which I personally think is awesome, so I'm hoping to get more than 6 reloads out of the stuff. Does anyone know if Mosin 1944 carbines are easy or hard on brass?

Hornady has data for both .308 and .312 bullets, I use the 150 gr. .312 bullet and it shoots well. If you want your brass to last the longest neck size instead of full length saves over working the brass (very true for the enfield). I use Lapua brass and have loaded some 5 times and still going strong...PM me if you would like the data for the .312 Hornady bullets...

A few points to consider:

- slug your bore to determine the groove diameter. I bet it's at least 0.311" and possibly as high as 0.315";
- "Mysticplayer" and Tradex sell a 0.312" 174gr BTHP that works great in my Mosins and Enfields;
- I use Prvi brass and it's good. All brass is annealed several times during production, but some manufacturers don't polish after the last annealling. It's ironic, but they save money and make people think it's better brass by not polishing; and
- "I know the Mosin is a ####-on-open bolt so it shouldn't have as much of a headspace issue as an Enfield," - I just don't understand this comment (it makes no sense). Headspace is the "Great Satan" of handloaders most of whom don't understand it. Headspace is what it is - neck size, and anneal after every five loadings and you'll get good brass life. Relax, your gun will not blow up..........

I use .308 for my Mosin... I use Privi brass, Norma, and Lapua. I've had great results with all three. I can hit the steel gong at my range that is at the 200m mark from a bench consistantly. Not sure how big the gong is though...

Good luck,.

What tpye of powder do you find that your mosin like's the best and what is the typical load you would use for the best accuarcy?

I'll have to double check when I get home... I use IMR 4064, and I will get back to you this afternoon on grains, and bullet weight...

I've had very very good results out of my M44 with it...

7.62x54r uses a .311" bullet.
"...at least 0.311" and possibly as high as 0.315"..." That's the Lee-Enfield.

?

I have a Mosin that slugs 0.315" and another that slugs 0.312". Others I've seen go everywhere in between with only oneI ever owned that was 0.311".

Same story with Lee Enfields.

Slug your bore.

I compared the rear locking lug Enfield bolt to the ####-on-open Mosin bolt because a gunsmith explained to me once that cocking from the rear can sometimes create more headspace.

Lock from the rear not #### I would believe, bolt would flex a little letting brass get bigger....Hence the overworking of enfield brass if full length sizing.
