7.62X54R surplus: Chinese vs. Bulgarian

I've only ever shot the Chinese milsurp...

It does great in my '34 Tula Mosin Nagant.

I've also used it in my son's '43 Tula SVT-40 with no issues... and that was during the holiday cold snap of -30 C !!!

Axle grease works just fine. I happen to have a container of moly grease (from Crappy Tire) in my range kit for lubing bolts, so I use that to lube bullets when needed.

The velocity drops with grease and the SD improves. A handy trick if your ammo turns out to be too hot one day. Grease drops pressure about 5,000 psi.

Good tip. That's handy to know for any type of ammo.

Curious as to how you found that a little grease on the bullet drops velocity any significant amount. FYI my opinion is that putting any oil or grease on a bullet or case to get it to work is a big no no. The only time I have ever heard of lubing cases was with the old Oerlikon 20mm. gun!

People regularly shoot alox lubed cast bullets well over 2000 fps. I agree that I wouldn't put any on the case though.

SVT chinese/ czech, / bulgarian

Shot 120 rds yesterday, -10 degrees:ar15:

Chinese most accurate, , out of 5 shots, 3 would be <2" then a flyer, as good as my old Garand which has much better sights of course. Overcast day, my old eyes do better with irons on warm sunny days. 2 FTF, good primer indent, shot the second time I loaded them.

Czech, grey coated looking ammo, cycled nicely , shot patterns not groups, none of my rifles like this stuff!

circle 10, Bulgarian I think, worked best, consistent 2.5-3" groups.

Fun rifle but still a PITA to clean!

.

Finally made it to the range with the 1943 Tula SVT-40 I bought before Christmas.

I used Chinese milsurp and my SVT cycled well.

These are my first 10 rounds... at 100 yards, standing, using iron sights only !!

I dont know which factory chinese I used, but it was complete horse turd.

SVT didnt cycle. FTE and stoveiping. The steel cases were so thin the casing would not come out of the chamber!!

So I used the rest in my mosin, and it was extremely smelly and dirty. 1 out of 5 didnt fire. Harder to work the bolt, but not as hard as the SVT with the fluted chamber.

If I find the factory code for this chinese ammo I will let you know. It was the worst ammo I have ever used. Edit: it is 55/71. 55 at the 12oclock, 71 at the 6.

I have used russian surplus, MFS, Sellier and Bellot and LVE. All with no complaints.

results may vary

I find the Chinese stuff to be the most accurate for my 43TULA PU, several 1.25-1.5" 5 shot groups at 100 meters. Privi shoots really well in my PU but the Chinese was better.I agree, not an SVT friendly round in my experience.

Proper lube on a cast bullet is OK I know but figured that lube (especially axle grease ) on a much faster and higher pressure FMJ round would not be a good idea! But then again I've never tried it and really wouldn't want to try it.

If I have a problem firing particular ammo out of a particular gun; I buy/reload some different ammo for it and move on.
