Well I'm tooling up to reload for my Broomhandle and have some questions about 30 mauser.

To start of yes I have the Lyman reloading book. I also know NOT to use 7.62 tokarev in a Mauser, I'm just asking the Tokarev loaders because they're the same bore and basically same cartridge besides not being able to put it through a Mauser.

What bullets have people had success with? I see that Hornady sells both a .308 (30 Mauser .308 86 gr RN SKU: 3100) and a .309 (30 Cal .309 90 gr HP XTP® SKU: 31000) bullet. Would firing the .309 cause premature bore wear or other problems that I should know about? I've heard of others firing the .309 with their Mausers, is it that big of a difference?

Also has anyone used the Sierra sport master 85 grain .308 round nosed bullet for 30 mauser, or 7.62 tokarev that can give any kind of range report?

Thanks in advance. :)

You know, I really wonder if this is just a rumor about the 7.63 Mauser cartridge being loaded to a lot lighter spec than the 7.62x25. As far as specs go dimensionally, they are the same.
In the C96 I used to own, I fed it a steady diet of 7.62x25. Never had an issue or any signs of wear.

Here's another little tid bit. I chronographed two twenty round boxes of Kynoch 7.63 Mauser ammunition that you used to be able to find quite commonly in most gunshops. It came on 10 round strippers as well. They also sold it in 50 round boxes. When the stuff was getting hard to come by, I switched to 7.62x25 Chinese production ammunition that I bought at Lever Arms many moons previously. You know, the Chinese 7.62x25 was slower than the UK production Kynoch offering. The Kynoch offerings had soft point bullets and were heavier than the Chinese bullets as well.

IMHO, your choice, not mine, if your broomhandle is in VG+ condition, it should be OK to shoot the 7.62x25. One caveat though, if your pistol isn't tight or in poor condition, I wouldn't shoot anything in it.

The 7.63 Mauser round was considered to be a major step up from the 7.63 Parabellum cartridge that was so much in vogue at the time thes pistols were considered cutting edge tech. I shot thousands of rounds through my C96. Both Kynoch and Com Bloc ammo. Nary a hitch. I miss that pistol/shoulder stock outfit. I sold it to pay for the electrical wiring in the house I was building at the time.

I had looked into using surplus ammo in my broomhandle too. Did a fair bit of googling and found a guy's site that had done testing on quite a few different nations/brands/headstamps of 7.62x25. Don't have the site bookmarked anymore, sorry. What it came down to was there is a very wide variance in the ammo. Certain headstamps shot at a reasonable speed, but lots shot way faster than for what an old mauser was made for. If I remember correctly, he chrono'd speeds from 1200 to over 1700 fps between the variations. Bottom line was you're taking a chance in getting something with too much zip for an old mauser. I gave up on the idea after reading that.

I have had my undies in a bunch over this topic for more than a decade.

I bought a broomhandle just to prove that it could shoot ammo that blew up 2 of my CZ52s.

Load books are not written to what I would call engineering standards.

The way load books were written 10 years ago about permissible pressure:
1) CZ52
2) Tokarev
3) C96 Mauser

Per my calculations and experiments, the real hierarchy is:
1) Tokarev
2) C96 Mauser
3) CZ52
