7.63x39 enfield?

It's a re-barrel job due to the large difference in case length and going from rimmed to rimless. Plus changing or altering the mag and the bolt head.

303-7.62x39

i have seen this done before. it was done by simple cutting back the chamber end of the barrel recutting the threads and useing a finshing 7.62x39 reamer to cut the short 303 chamber.

I'd see the special interest arms web sight and its where I got the idea. Would be nice if we could get the kits here. I heard it wasn't that tough as Black John says and would really like to take a poke at it. I contacted the local gunshop here and they're looking to see what they have for enfield barrels and if it looks viable I might start spinning them off on the lathe and sell them for minimal amounts.

Re7,62 x39

YES i made 2 off them
just a single shots
you can tread the barell back than cut it
Lots of f;;aroud before it fiers
But thas what i call cheap shoting SANDOR

I have considered this conversion, and have a suitable barrel, and an action. I'm just not sure I want to buy a reamer.

I've been wondering about this sort of thing too. I was thinking of maybe a chamber insert; cheaper and simpler. I found a U.S site that sells them for about $25.00 U.S, but apparently they don't ship to Canada. I was thinking of asking my local gunsmith/machinist about his opinion on making be an insert. If rat-7's gunsmith starts making inexpensive converted barrels in 7.62x39, please sign me up for one though.

hmmmmm...... i am very much liking this idea......... Once my current two rifle builds are complete...... this 7.62x39 enfield thing is going to happen on my bench hehehehe maybe I'll try to take pics along the way. Have a perfect minty barrel for the Job. Wonder if a new bolt head will be required?

If it is a single shot, no alterations to the bolthead would be required. If a counterbore is desired, a carbide bit will cut the bolthead without having to anneal it. Extractor work is going to be needed. The Aussies have used a plunger style ejector built into the bolthead for .223 conversions. Or a spring loaded ejector could be fitted to the left sidewall of the receiver, and the bolthead slotted for it.
In the US, the single stack 10 rd. AK magazines would work. Here, the Mini-30 magazine might be worth considering. Or, perhaps a .303 magazine could be reworked with a spacer and shortened follower.
Years ago, I fitted a SVT-40 muzzle unit to a .303. Should work on a 7.62 conversion, to finish off a carbine length barrel.
Lots of bubba'd Lee Enfields to experiment with.

For the mag issues i was thinking about trimming an SKS mag follower to fit a Enfield mag and a block spacer. I'll be bringing my measuring tools from school this weekend and get some more details narrowed down. I read somewhere that the bolt face isn't an issue, all you need to do is bring the extractor claw closer to the center of the bolt by a small amount, I'd probably just mill a new one.

Although it is not on an Enfield, ever consider the Savage or Stevens?

Got some new 223 center feed mags and the 7.62X39 loads and feeds. You only get three in the mag but that sure beats a single shot.

Barrel install and headspace should be straightforward. The extended extractor is available making the bolt work a snap. You use a 308 bolt head and the extended extrator OR you can rework a 223 head and just shortern the 223 extractor.

I am thinking that a P14 barrel would have a large enough shank shorten, rethreaded and still allow a bit of chamber clean up. Otherwise, an aftermarket is available.

What do you guys think?

Jerry

PS By the way, like the work done on that Lee/AR stock mod.

I just bought a Stevens in 308 about 2 hours ago to do this conversion on. :D Just have to find a bbl, get an extractor, make a bbl vice, make/buy a bbl nut wrench, get a reamer, get some lathe tooling, make a cat head for my lathe....oh ya and lean how to run the lathe too.

Yep, I should have it all done in a year or two.

The one thing I was concerned about is having enough striking force from the firing pin for the military primers. They are hard.
