7.63x39 in 308 chamber?

OP, ENG is showing you how to do it right.

The 7.62x39 bullets in milsurp ammo measure out around .310 on average. You can easily shoot them well through a .308 diameter bore.

My commercial bolt action chambered in 7.62x39 has a 1-12 twist rate. I believe some Remington barrels do as well.

Go for the build. IMHO you shouldn't need a new barrel but that's completely up to you. Mystic doesn't "make" barrels by the way but I'm sure that whatever he gets or chambers for you will be up to par.

I am under the impression that you meant you would set back a barrel with a 308Win barrel so the 7.62x39 shoulder would headspace properly??? This is how wildcats are created and it shouldn't be much of a problem. You just might like the new chamber as is because I believe it's commercial name is "30BR." Lots of variants on the 7.62x39 cartridge and what you're proposing is one of them. Especially with 120-130 grain bullets.

The Ruger mini-30 has a 308 bore with a chamber that accept “standard” comm-block 7.62x39 ammo that has projectiles sized up to .312”

What I’m trying to say, is that there is no reason whatsoever that a .312 projectile won’t swage down to a .308 bore.

In fact I do believe I remember reading a report/article (in Hatcher’s notebook iirc) that describes the throating of a 270 rifle for 30-06 and firing 30-06 Milsurp ammo through the 270. No pressure signs, and quite accurate by all accounts.

Would the endevour be cost effective? I doubt it.... but is anything worthwhile doing ever cost effective?

Thanks for the input. I'll keep you guys updated. I have a 300wm project thats heading to a smith, and a m14 that will be going to m14medic soon. I will start a thread on those when they come back too.

Why not just go and buy a CZ carbine in 7.62 -39 ,a bolt gun.

Yeah, no kidding! A CZ 527 will set the OP back 1G for a new gun, without the .308-.311 bore problem, new bolt, chamber sleeve... let alone a 308win barrel can't be re-chambered to 7.62x39 without shortening it... on anything but a straight contour barrel, that'll make the barrel channel look like crap even if there is still enough steel to thread for re-attaching the action. The bore issue alone is enough, let alone the financial impracticality.
