I want to purchase some of the Finnish ammo for Mosin-Nagant model 27. Does anyone know where I could get some? If I have to reload...can I use one for 7.62 X 54R Russian? Anyone tried reloading one of this type? Thanks all. Cheers.

The calibre designaion is 7.62X53R. Theonlydifference is the Finnish calibre is .308, opposed to .311+ for the Russian.

Sorry, don't stock it at this time.

Regards,

Peter

Just checked and Lapua does produce this round, but it would be about $2.00 per round and most Nagant owners are looking for milsurp, not high-end. Might bring in a case for the few.

Peter

Thanks for the reply Peter. With regards to reloading...by using the 7.62 X 54mmR primer decapping...would the ball open the neck too much? and can I use a .308 Win. neck sizer so I could fit the .308 bullet? Cheers.

As Canada's official Lapua importer, we definitely advise against the use of 7.62X54R in 53R rifles. I have written a Finnish test engineer and will post his response on this, as it is a safety issue.

Wait - I apologise for completely barging in, but weren't most finn nagants in 7.62x54R? I know I'm probably just in the dark, but I'm just about to start reloading for my finn m39 and I figured it would be a good thing to know...

M1garand, yes, you have it correct.

Regarding the use of 7.62X54R in 53R rifles, I received this respose from a former test engineer at Lapua:

"Firing the 7.62X54R ammo is not dangerous with M39 rifles with original barrels made for the D166 bullets. Actually, the 7.62X53R and 7.62X54R ammunition is the same thing in practice and they have been mixed for centuries. However, if you have the 7.62X53R rifle with the .308 cal barrel, then 7.62X54R ammo may cause higher pressures."

slicknick is corrrect, however, we recommend determining barrel dimensions before firing with 7.62X54R ammo.

Peter

Peter, are all 7.62 X 53R ammo boxer primed? Or just the Lapua ones? $2.00 per round is quite steep. Handloading is the best option I could think of if I buy spent brass.

Sorry, don't know. Lapua only produces top-shelf boxer-primed ammo and the brass is meant for reloading. Reloading is the way to go!

Peter
