I will be soon reloading my 8mm Mauser for deer hunting. I'm an experience reloader and target shooter, but I don't know much about hunting......

I plan to buy the cheap Lee reloading dies for this calibre, for FL sizing only.

I got a unknown 98 Mauser action rifle with a 19" step tappered barrel...

I'm looking for a good deer hunting load!!!!!!

thanks

Seb

I dont' think you will be disapointed, a number of shooters here load for the 8mm Mauser.

I also use the cheap Lee RGB FL dies for this and the load I use for my Father's old M98 is 175 Grain Sierra's pushed by IMR-4064 and WLR primers. I dont' remember the powder load but Im pretty sure I worked up using Hogdon's Online data (I believe around 49 grs as a max load). Gave me about 2700 fps in a 24" barrel and shot about 1-1.5" at 100 yards.

good luck.

I used to use the Hornady 170g bullet and IMR4064 powder. Get you hands on the Hornady load notes for the 8mm, they load to better preasures. I think I may still have them around somwhere if you want.

You may find that by using a tad faster powder than the IMR4064/Varget and others you may have a bit better velocities and less muzzle blast with a 19" barrel.

The IMR4064 is, for sure one of the best powder for the 8X57. I also really like the H380 with 200 grains bullets. That is one of my bear medecine.
