300 and 7mm will kill w.e u want
What have you shot moose with in the past?

I haven't been so fortunate to draw alot of tags, but did get one with a 35Whelen a couple of years ago.

I've owned all three of them... and while my first love was a 30-06 (killed a pile of game with one... still own it), my vote goes to the 7 Rem Mag of the 3 mentioned.

30-06 recoil with 270 Win ballistics.... what is not to like?

A 140gr TSX @ 3200+ fps is as close to a lazer beam as you'll get in a hunting cartridge with less than 120gr of powder capacity, and will take any critter in NA.... and I'd not hesitate to use in on the largest bear and bison to boot!

Factory ammo is plentiful, and recoil is very managable.

Of course I'd pick the 280AI.. but that was not an option you gave (grin).

In the end however, no moose/deer/elk/bear...will know a lick of difference between the 3 shooting good bullets..... so pick your poision and get out hunting (bring a youngster with ya)!

Good luck

I have a savage weather warrior in 7mm it has a muzzle brake so there is very little recoil but shoots flat and packs a punch. I chose this gun because i wanted something that my wife could also use.

I just say 30-06 because I have only shot a 30-06, only own a 30-06 and I see the hole left in a tree trunk after I shot it with a hollowpoint 180 grain bullet.

7 mm is about $10 more a box for ammo. I know nothing about the 270 so I can't comment.

personally i like the .270. though its not on your list, a .350 in the remington (heavy gun), recoil is actually not bad at all.

So are you saying that the 30-06 is great for hunting trees?Even if you don't hit them good, they don't run away.:D

This should have been posted on the Husqvarna vs Stihl vs Poulan thread. ;) LoL :D

I feel a need to express my salf to you guys,I'mm deep in love whith the old standert calibers, like the 3006. 308. 7mm. and 300 win. well you know wath I mean. I believe that most of you guys probebly know a lot more about shooting then I will ever know. I know the 7mm hase further reach. and less re-coil then the 3006.thats why I said the 7mm is your gun.

Actually in identical rifles, the 7mmremmag produces more recoil than the 30-06.However most 7mm rifles have longer barrels, are slightly heavier and have better recoil pads,so the felt recoil is comparable.

It'd be a tossup between the 7mm Rem Mag & 30-06, and I'd be just as happy with either. 30-06 would probably get the nod. Not much ya cant do with a premium 165ish grain bullet in a 30 cal.

How about a 260 magnum ?
Would that do the trick for you :p

They are perfect for hunting trees. I was just trying to say if it did that to a tree I wonder what it would do to a animal

Unfortunately unless the animals are made of wood, the results might be very different as wood does not resemble animal tissue.

I would buy a gun in each caliber.
That's the spirit! :D

If you want an accurate simulation of a bullet's effects on soft tissue, you can do one of two things;

1) shoot at jugs full of water, box 'o truth style (he built a long wooden box and lined up 4 litre milk jugs full of water in it). The depth of penetration in water is roughly double the penetration in soft tissue.
2) make up a few batches of ballistic gelatin (there's a recipe on the internet somewhere, just google it), and measure the penetration depth with a ruler or a long thin rod or whatever. Ballistic gelatin will show you a picture of how the bullet behaves during penetration as well, so you get to see the wound channel (or lack of one), the fragmentation or expansion of the bullet, etc, etc.

I agree einie menie minie moe.
If you have never shot a rifle before you will find the recoil oppresive on all three.
The 270 and '06 will have 22" bbls, while the 7mm Rem Mag will have a 24" bbl.
If you actually did a side by side comparison between the 270 and the 7mm Rem. Mag, the average guy would'nt know the difference in performance out to 400yds. And I'll take the leap that many a shooter wont even know the ballistic difference between all three calibres.
So you have some pondering to do, cause this is obviously a Ford, vs. Chev. vs. Dodge type of question.

Lets talk some more about the 7mm, who are the people that have created the Lyman 47'th reloading handbook? These people are telling us that this is easily the third most popular big game cartridge in this country. it started with the neen for cartridge with more punch then the 3006 but not more re coil. the 7mm remington magnum has been used to take every big game that walks on this continent. Iwoud't want to be to opinionnated, but I have allways believe that. I'mm not saying that you are wrong. please resprespond.
