7 mm, 30-06 or 270 ?

Well, the 7mm does typically have more recoil than the '06. Not a lot mind you - probably not even so much that the average shooter would notice, but it is there. It's simple physics. A 7mm can launch a heavier bullet faster. Further, there's ~80 grains of powder shooting out the barrel as opposed to ~60. All that additional mass and speed translates directly to higher recoil.

I'm sorry I have to disagree with you somuch,I don't even know if we are talking about the same thing. But I have never used 80 grains of powder to load a 7mm mag. The most I have ever used is 63-5. grain of R22. you must be talking about soming else. thank you.please come back.

with exception of H870, IMR 7828 used to be about the slowest powder used in the 7mm Rem Mag. Lots of guys used 4350/4831, which have max loads in the high 50's/low 60s, with bullets from 140-175 gr.

with the newer, slower burning powders we have out there today, you can really fill up the big 7mm case. RL25/H1000 are two great 7mm powders, especially with heavier 160+ grain loads.

30-06 and 7mm, dont use a tiny 270, 30-06 would be the best choice way more versatile for ammo, i understand a 270 will kill a moose but people are always telling me not to use small calibers for animals so id stick with the -06 for sure

Thats cause you want to shoot bears with your 22-250 when you have other rifles that will do the job a little easier.

I vote the 30-06

Well thanks to all of you for the usefull information.

I own a Savage bolt action in 270 Win caliber and just bought a M-305. I mainly hunt deer and will hunt Moose this fall and eventually Caribou. I am satisfied with the 270 though a little overkill at 100-150 yards range on Deers, (my SKS and black powder does a very good job at those distances). Never had the chance to hunt with the M-305 yet, the 308 Win should be ok for Deers.

With all your usefull comments I think I would be tempted by the 7 mm for an all around hunting rifle. though I guess I would have to get used to te recoil and more expensive amo..;)
