In my quest to have a 7x57,what is the appropriate action to build one on,long or short...I see it is damn near same case lenght as the 6 mm.......I can't seem to buy one,so i figured I would buy some bits and pieces over time and get one built.....yeah I know I could have a 7-08 or ???,but I just like the 7x57 for some strange reason:D
 
I would recommend a long action over a short action... then you can use any bullet seated how you want it, and the magazine won't be too short...
 
The 7x57 will fit an feed flawlessly through any standard lengyh mauser 91-98, as well as any standard length commercial action with a 30-06 diameter bolt face. Ruger, Tikka, several European makers as well as others make or have made rifles up in 7x57 as well. Advertise in the EE for one. Unless you really want to build one, it's much cheaper to get a factory model, they are normally very accurate, no matter what the brand as long as the barrels and stock are in good shape. bearhunter
 
I have a sporting Mauser in 7x57 dated 1898 on a 93 action. It is still very accurate.

I can get a great deal on a Tikka T3 lite stainless in 30.06,but I really want a 7x57...

I figured I would buy the rifle and have it rebarelled....over time of course

I really want a ruger 7x57 tang safety..I had 2 of them a little while back and was foced to sell them due to financial obligations, and have been regretting it ever since....I've also got a beater of a Win model 70 in 30.06 kicking around and a US model 1917 as well in 30.06......
 
for a factory new 7mm Mauser IMHO the Ruger is the only way to go....call around...you'll probably find one. I once briefly owned a 7x57 on a long action 700...there was a bit of extra room in the mag box but it wasn't drastic. But when the bolt is closed and you are looking thru the scope you can't see the extra space in the mag box. It fed very smoothly of course....the problem with having a long actioned 7x57 around here is it would be too hard to resist the application of a 280AI reamer.....
 
I picked up a 1908 Mauser 98 in 7x57 a while back with a similar idea in mind. I ended up getting a fair amount of adverse reaction for even thinking of using it as a basis for a project. I intended to stay with the original barrel and calibre but haven't touched it yet. Still 'considering'.

I'm with you, I looked and looked and could not find the rifle I wanted.
So I found an action, bought a walnut blank at a gun show and had a local smith build this for me 10 years ago. Lots of Brownell parts, checkered steel butt plate and grip cap, Leupold 2.5X and Tally rings.
Shoots great, looking to build a big brother in 9.3X62 to match.

What do ay thinka bout a rebarrel job on a Tikka T3 in 30.06.....the stainless,synthetic with a detach mag....I wonder if there will be any feeeding issues at all

I'm just thinking out loud here is all....am gonna keep my eyes out for a Ruger for sure,I just like the fit and feel of these rifles

As all fellow gunnutz, I would fall in love with a new rifle a couple of times a year, but the romance would only last until the next gun show then something else would catch my eye. After years of buying and selling I decided this is what I really wanted. I still buy and sell all the time this is half the fun being a gunnut......but when the hunting season comes around this is the one I always take along.

I can't see why there would be any feeding issues at all with the rebarrel job from 30-06 to 7X57. You can always cycle a few through the action before rebarreling I am sure it would work.
 
Any of the cartridges of that particular length 55, 56, 57, MM)
Work super, and the sttandard '98 action just seems to compliment them.
I'm not a real bolt action fan, but do like the '98 for sure, mannlicher stocks, doubvle set triggers and the 6.5X55-7X57 cartridges.
I finally found a rifle with all the stuff I like!:dancingbanana:
Gonna toss the scope however, and put a set of Redfield peeps on it!

You forgot to mention the butterknife bolt handle and long lever floorplate release (floorplate is hinged at the front). CZ made some really nice Mausers 'back in the day"!

Is it a pre-decessor to the 22F or was CZ a separate company back then?

One day I will work up my arsenal to look like Jimmy's, I love that Mauser-Rigby look of the short forearm.

Of course I need a full wood mannlicher too!

I would use the standard length action too. As Guntech mentioned you will never have a OAL issue with the only slightly longer mag.
 
Yup, it's a genuine CZ, marked so on the left side of the receiver!
However, We are not sure if the barrel is factory, and the stock is a custom job, as is the floorplate release.
