7 mm

.284 is 7mm right?? ;)

How come nobody has mentioned the old .284 Winchester?

Well, the .284 is a short action cartridge with powder capacity similar to that of a .280 Remington. But in my opinion, the .284's weakness, as well as its strength, is that its at its best in a long action rifle so that bullets can be seated long enough, so as not to intrude into the powder capacity of the case. If the bullet is seated deeply enough to cycle through a short action magazine, the .284 can never match the ballistics of the .280 unless it's restricted to short, flat base bullets. So in short action rifles, the 7-08 is seen as the more efficient cartridge, since the .284 in a similar rifle provides little more performance, if any. For the handloader with a long action rifle, the .284 will do anything the .280 will do, and when both are loaded with very long bullets, might even out perform it. That said, the .284 falls short of a 7 magnum, so one needs to define his requirements, and simply acquiring a 7 magnum might be the wisest choice if you need more than a .280 but want to use a 7mm bullet. If you insist on shooting 180 gr VLDs, perhaps an STW or an Ultrmag is better yet.

Toss up between 7x57mm and 7mm-08 for me.

Not trolling here , but there is a crowd that will show saying that the 7-08 is good for the wife, or kids, and it basically ends there.

I gotta say this, you set yourself up with a higher capacity , heavier recoiling rifle and then get a 7-08 geared up for the sensitive shooters for the same game.

What is that sayin? ;)

Well let's see......I have a 7-08, 7X64, 280 Rem, 7mm Wby and a 7mm RUM.........have had and have hunted with many 7RM..........30 cals are my favorite hunting bullets, 7mms are OK for deer I guess.........

I have a 7mm Rem Mag that shoots .5" with 175 grain bullets @2880 fps and .35" with 160 grain at 2975fps...love it. Have ordered a 7mm-08 lightweight for a deer rifle, and if I like that rifle as much as I hope I may end up getting a .280-AI just because.

Yup from the smallest whitetail to the largest moose, all members of the deer family!

.280 Remington is my favourite. The 7mm-08 (I do have one) would as easily do its job, but the .280 is my sentimental favourite. I just bought a .280 Rem 700 Classic (1997? Limited Edition) from another GunNut and hope to get it out to the range soon.

Use enough gun? Know your limits? When I set my daughter up with a 7/08 there was a corresponding decrease in range to go with it, but that matched with her abilities. That the sort of thing that seems prudent when 6 or 700 fps don't come to the party.

Huh, and here I thought that's what made the 7X57 better. To me the 7-08 was at best a reinvention, and at worse, a step backwards from a standard set 122 years ago. While the 7-08 stands as a good cartridge, its not as good as the 7X57, just as the 7X57 isn't as good as the .280, nostalgia notwithstanding, although it is more or less a clone of the 7X64 Brenneke.
My only thought on the 7/08 is that it fits in very neatly in a s/a without any wasted space, whereas the 7x57 requires a longer/heavier action, both being very close in performance. A 280 or 7Mag would fit into the same long action that the 7mm Mauser requires. If the action length debate is of concern to those trying for a modern lightweight rifle, then the 7/08 is a better choice. I like them both, so my arguments here would weak at best.

I do agree that the 7/08 was a reinvention of the 7x57, but wasn't a step backwards rather a bit of refinement.

I just thought the guys were gonna admit to the ladies beings better hunters. ;)
