Thinking about building a 7 SAUM on a long action for some long range fun. I'm just looking for feedback from guys shooting this caliber. I am leaning towards a 7mm cartridge and this one seems to offer good performance. Thinking of a 26-28" 8 twist barrel to shoot the 180+ class bullets. Open to ideas as this is just the research stage.

I've got one getting built by Insite. 26" carbon barrel. Hoping to get the 180 ELDMs to about 2900 but after seeing a few 147 ELDMs explode mid-air this past weekend, I might have to end up using 180 or 190gr Bergers, haha.

What action are you building on? Going to run ADG brass? 1:8 twist. Perhaps i will email those guys and see what a barrel will run me

Just building on a Rem 700 SA (with a pinned lug and notched feed ramp) that I already have. Has a 26" Benchmark .308 on it that I'm having cut down to 20" so will be a switch barrel with that and 26" 7 SAUM. Running Bertram brass as I picked up 300 pieces a few years back.

I've seen that one mentioned a few times on the hide. Whats the brass situation like? That one will run heavies in a short action or you still need a long for max performance?

Supposedly you can run heavies in a standard short action, the OAL is a tad shorter then the 7 SAUM. ADG is making brass, but I'm not sure how easy it is to get in Canada.

Interesting. That would save me from having to buy a long action. What about dies?

Again I'm not sure about availability in Canada. The Sherman cartridge company sells dies for their cartridges on their website, I believe they are forster. Whidden will make custom dies off of a reamer print or a loaded round, they are my preference for dies.

Shouldn't be an issue to get dies in Canada, just might take some time.

Heavies in a Short action INVADE the case capacity Badly ! I shoot mostly 160 gr-ers in my R700 & Saum ! I need to get a Wyatt extended mag box and have the action machined ! RJ

This is exactly what the 7 Sherman Short Magnum was designed to solve. So that you can have the ballistics of a 7 SAUM, while keeping it in the realm of standard short actions.
