7 x 61 Sharp and Hart

I recently acquired a S&L 7x61S&H rifle, mine is stamped 1in14 on the barrel. I haven't got dies for it but the reloads that came with it are 150 gr. Needs a new butt pad, the one on the rifle is as hard as hell.

The S&L rifles are very high quality and have been ridiculed for being an inferior rear locking lug design but tests that I've read about stated that the action was actually stronger than Mauser 98 actions and in fact was the first choice of Roy Weatherby for his high pressure line of Wby cartridges.
My rifle is not an S&L but an FN Mauser with an Apex barrel and topped with a Leupold 3.5-10x40 Vx3.

I have had a couple S&L rifles in 7x61 Both were/are good shooters. I still had one of them. 7x61 Super cases will take about 2 grs more powder than the 7x61re stamped cases to reach max pressures. I have found 140 and 150 bullets to be accurate in both rifles I have owned. The 150 gr partition is hard to beat on bigger game with the 140 Nosler Accubond and the 140 Barnes TTSX both being very good. IMR 4350 has been the BEST powder. With the Super cases start about 60 grs and work up. I have found about 63 grs has been near max in both my rifles and the most accurate. You may need to play with seating depth.

Good info rokoro, thanks.
I've had my 140 grain Partitions and SST's up to 63 grains of IMR 4350 and the pressure was getting up there but I've since backed down to 62.7 which seems to work well. There's room for more powder even though my brass is all Re stamped but I won't go any higher and in fact may back down some more if it's going to be hard on the brass.
I had some 140 grain Rem pp bullets with 62.7 gr IMR 4350 that I put across my magnetospeed and they showed 3170 fps but that's the only load I've crono'd.

My 7x61S&H is in a model 68DL Schultz & Larsen with a 1 - 10" twist. On it, I have a Leupold VARI-X III, 3.5x10. Early on I went through all my brass and have kept only the 7x61 Super. While I haven't, yet, done any in-depth accuracy load development and testing, I have basically settled on the Barnes TTSX in 140gr and 150gr coupled with IMR 4350 and CCI 250 primers. So far, my only use of the 7x61 in the field was on a successful Antelope draw/hunt in Alberta a few years back.

My 7x61S&H is in a model 68DL Schultz & Larsen with a 1 - 10" twist. On it, I have a Leupold VARI-X III, 3.5x10. Early on I went through all my brass and have kept only the 7x61 Super. I like the 68DL rifles. Funny how they changed from 1/14 down to 1/12 twist barrels as time went on, there must have been more demand for the heavier bullets.

I'm really late to this thread, but I'm interested in the 7x61 S&H round in the Schultz & Larsen rifles. For those of you who have handloaded for your 7x61 S&Ls, do your rifles have freebore? If so, any idea of how long it is? (Maybe .25" or so.)

Some old data. Might be useful.
