I had so many issues with my new series 80 back in the mid-eighties. Failures to feed, stovepipes etc.. Tried different mags, had the gun tuned by Paul Barrette, it was never reliable. Traded it in on a new Springfield 1911 and never regretted it.

That wouldn't surprise me at all. S&W has also typically assembled guns from old parts on hand after implementing an engineering change.
