I finally mounted the Nightforce NXS and put together some test loads. Now if the weather will co-operate,I can finally do some shooting to see if my 5-R is as accurate as many people are claiming that their 5-Rs are.

I went middle ground on mine. Zeiss Conquest 6.5-20x 50mm Rapid Z 1000 yard reticle. A NF would have been my first choice but I'm very happy with the Conquest.

Hey Stubblejumper I recommend starting with 168 grain Federal Gold match ammo to start with. Use this for a baseline to compare your reloads to. This ammo should give you sub .5 moa at 100 yards 5 round groups. Even with the trigger at the stock heavy weight. ;) (I have recently had mine lowered to 3 pounds).

Let us know how it does.

Yes but what are you going to use for your baseline?
I'm a firm believer in finding at least one off the shelf accurate round for a rifle. at least that gives me a base line for expected accuracy.

I haven't fired a factory load in any of the last dozen or so centerfire rifles that I have owned.I simply try loads until I find an accurate one.I know several other handloaders that do the same.

I've got some 168 SMK 44.5 Varget ready to shoot. Also some 168 grain HSM match ammo which should shrink the groups a bit from the 168 Federal Gold.

That being said my only two groups so far with my 5R have been .657" edge to edge and .673" edge to edge. Both are sub .4 moa centre to centre. That was with Federal Gold.

It's finally warmed up here and it looks like there won't be much wind this weekend. :D

I am ready to test some more 168gr and 175gr matchkings,as well as some 155gr Lapua scenars,as soon as I am recovered from a recent surgery. The first Matchking loads produced five shot groups of around 3/4".If you intend on using Lapua brass,be aware that the Lapua brass develops more pressure than Remington or Winchester brass.

 30 km/h winds.

Shot pistol instead. Supposed to be just as bad tomorrow. Looks like Easter weekend will be my best bet.

Where do you guys get Federal gold 168? I am in Ontario and have no idea who carries them. At least the bigger stores don't carry Federal

The local gun stores here carry it. I've also ordered some in from the stores, but I find if it's not on the shelves don't bother since it seems to take about 6 months to get anything.

Check with the suppliers on this site. Also mail order might be an option.

The one that I really lucked out finding was the 168 HSM ammo. I grabbed 4 boxes of it. Haven't seen it back on the shelves since.
