Does anyone here have any experience with the 700 5R Milspec.I was considering purchasing a 700 xcr tactical in 308win,but the 700 5R Milspec looks very interesting as a reasonably priced range gun.

I have fired one on a few occassions and I really like it. The stock is very comfortable, I like the trigger, the action was very smooth and it produced very nice results. However, Im not a fan of the price tag attached. For the 1200 dollars I think you can get a regular 700 and then put a nice stock on it and have similar results.

However, (can I have two howevers?) the R5 is very easy to clean due to the type of rifling that is used.

I'm sure others can provide better opinions from more trigger time. In my opinion, it's very nice but I question the price.

As far as price goes,I can't find any factory heavy barreled stainless 700 much cheaper, let alone if you add in the price of a high quality aftermarket stock. My main interest is the accuracy that this gun delivers with the 5R rifling.

Given that it's right around the same price as the 700P or LTR which are both known quantities, I'd be tempted to try the 5R for the sake of seeing what all the fuss is about.

The reviews around the web are very positive...

I really like the rifle and like I mentioned it performed very well. But for 600 so does my Savage. I'm not knocking the rifle but for a guy like me on a budget I got a rifle and scope for the price of this rifle.

Just my 2 cents. Take it for what it's worth.

If I had the extra cash I probably would have considered it.

I picked up an R5 from Frontier firearms last fall. I really like it. I also shoot a Remington 700 heavy barrel/varmint stock and I prefer the R5. The R5 seems to shoot accurate with almost any load I put thru it. It is one of the most accurate rifles I have shot. A load of 175 SMK under 44 grs of varget will shoot into one hole.

I have owned an R5 for about a year ( from Marlin at Frontier ) and have shot about 20 rounds each weekend since. Overall, the fit and finish was good but while I personally like the stock very much and it 'fits' me some of my buddies found the palm swell too large for comfort so (as with any rifle I guess) if at all possible see how it fits you. I also put on a Blackhawk Industries cheekpiece for comfort as I am using high rings with the Falcon Menace that sits on the rifle and I found the cheekpiece eliminates a slightly annoying and high pitched vibration tone that comes through the stock after a round is fired.

Re accuracy, I have used 168 gr Hornaday HPBT but the bullet my particular rifle likes most is the SMK 175 gr HPBT. For propellant, I have used 41.7 to 44 gr of Varget and my best results are with the 175 gr SMK and 43 gr of Varget ( incidentally, 43 gr of Varget above the Sierra manual recommended max but within the Varget recommended range as listed in the Hogdon Powder manual ). With this combo I simply cannot put all bullets thru the same hole or match the results reported in reviews because I can't shoot that well, but I can comment upon the real-World accuracy I achieve and if I do my part I can get the holes to touch at 100 and can produce a 2.75" 5 shot group at 300. I strongly suspect that in the hands of a more competent shooter the rifle would be much more accurate.

Would I buy this rifle again ? Yes, no doubt.

Mine seems to be a sub .5 moa rifle at 100 yards with factory 168 grain Federal gold match ammo. Also of note was the fact that it shot 165 grain Fusion hunting exceptionally well (3/4 moa). The only adjustment needed between the two was one click of verticle.

I'm looking forward to trying out the 175 grain ammo and reloading.

This is currently one of my more accurate rifles and it does this with factory off the shelf ammo.

The only modification I've had was to get the trigger lowered to 3 pounds. Even with the 5+ factory trigger it was very good (The sub .5 moa groups were with the 5+ pound trigger). No travel, clean and crisp. I'm looking forward to shooting this rifle with the 3 pound trigger. :D
I'm extremely happy with this rifle.

There's a store selling the 5R for $1000, $1125 I recall including tax and shipping. I can't remember the store name but it was listed on another 5R milspec thread on this site. Do a search and you should find it pretty easily.

That being said I do have one rifle which I suspect will be more accurate than my 5R (haven't scoped or shot it yet). I bought it off another member here who gave me a very good deal on it. But.... it's a 7mm wildcat (7mm WSSM). So no off the shelf ammo. It's pretty much a custom rifle that would have cost me almost twice the 5R to have made. So yes there are better rifles but at far more cost for the average person to have made. Also the 5R is very versatile thanks to the 24 inch barrell and the synthetic stock.
