Can anyone tell me if the 700 and the 722 bolts will interchange? I have a 700 short action with no bolt but i do have access to a 722 bolt at a reasonable price . I know the 722 bolt does not have the groove for the bolt guide rib found on the newer 700 actions but i am sure i can mill a slot in the lug for that.
Also does anyone know of any books available that would have the dimensions or drawings for actions and parts so a guy can tell what will interchange ?
PM me if you have any info
Thanks Winchester :D

They'll interchange...almost. The 722 has a straighter handle than the 700 so some stock inletting might be required.Other than that, they'll work. Headspace will need checking of course,..a moot point if you're rebarrelling.

I've done it and there was no problem other than machining in the antiwobble slot in the right lug.
Interesting enough I picked up an early model 700 short action last year and it didn't have the slot milled in the right side lug either. I didn't know before that this slot was not present on the first production model 700 rifles.

I think the anti-bind slot was introduced about 1970 or '72....

interesting tidbit of info on anti-bind slots...I bought another Model Seven a few weeks ago, probably the 7th or 8th I've owned and immediately noticed the slot in the lug....so I thought they had finally put this feature on the Sevens....upon further investigation I noticed that the rail in the receiver for the slot to ride on wasn't there.......the front end of the bolt is the same as the 700, so I guess they machine all of the bolt heads the same and then use the 700 bolt head for the Seven,.....the slot is just there on the Sevens because the 700 uses it...So if you have a Model Seven with a slot in the lug, you don't have the anti-bind feature....just a slot in the lug...

A friend just purchased a 700 that has a square cutout in the front end of the rear receiver bridge. What's up with that?

that's a real old 700. I'm not sure when they removed that rear clip slot. It was a carry over from the 721/722 rifles. The last one I owned that had it was a 7Mag built in '63.....I had a 22-250 from '66 that I think also had it.....sold a 700/222 Rem Mag to a CGN'er a couple years ago that was built in '64, it had the clip slot IIRC....

guide rib

I just check "Rifles of the World " by John Walter
It was 1974 that the guide rib system was added also in that year remington reduced the rearward sweep of the bolt handle to prevent the shank from bruising the fingers during recoil and a special cast stailess magazine follower replaced the older folded stamping.
I was asking around out remington bolts and an old fella said i gota couple of those remingtons in my closet wanna buy em , so i had to go take a look ..... I am now the proud owner of some more Remingtons
A 722 / 222 heavy barrel with target peeps and a 700 Mountain rifle in 243 looks virtually as new... ,
Dang,, Remington collection is starting to look better than the Winchesters .... ahhh not ....we know that could never happen .....
