$700-$900 hunting rifles

Specifically, I will be purchasing a .243.

A buddy of mine recently picked up a Tikka T3 Stainless Hunter. The bolt on that rifle is crazy smooth.

What I was hoping from you guys was to get a simple response with the name of a rifle and why. I'm trying to compile a list of comparatives so that I can start some research.

New or used? I think there are some great used rifles available - especially the older ones. Are you looking for a light rifle? Short/carbine or a longer barrel?
 
Remington 7600

When I was 12 years old I killed my first moose with this gun with a single shot. Of course, I am not recommending that you use your new .243 as your primary big game rifle. But I am a huge fan of the 7600. I currently have one in .270 and sold one in .243 a few months ago to a CGNer who has given me positive feedback since using it.

Bolts are great, semi-autos are great, levers are great. But there's something about the Remington 7600 that will always have me coming back for more. I have never had a jam or any other problems with one, and I've used them in some pretty miserable conditions.
 
The Browning X Bolts are very nice handling rifles. I like the ergonomics and the magazine, it is a light weight rifle that can be carried all day and they seem to be very accurate too. Best to handle one first though.
 
The nicest rifle in that range currently is the Winchester Model 70 Featherweight. Fit and finish, no plastic, good trigger and a handy weight and size.
 
Browning BLR,X bolt,come to mind.Above mentioned also good choices.Maybe the best thing for you,would be to handle as many as possible.And see what fits you.
 
New....should have mentioned that, also wood stock. I absolutely plan on handling it. I'm about average size, 6ft 215 lbs.

Based on my experience with the venture I'd look at the tc icon if I was going into that price range. A model 70 would also be on my list.
 
I'm a Savage fan but I can admit that the bolt on my brother's Tikka T3 in .308 is superior to any of my Savages. The only reason that I don't have a Tikka T3 is that they are a little light for my taste. There are a couple of "plastic" parts that I don't agree with but I don't see them as being a deal breaker.

I also stick by my T/C Pro Hunter combo of .50, .410, .22lr, .308, 44 mag, and .375 H&H. I really like single shots and the Pro Hunter can handle almost any caliber including muzzleloaders and shotguns. I've never had a problem with any fit, finish, or accuracy with any of the barrels I've put on the frame. It has performed beyond what I originally anticipated.
 
I'll echo Winchester Featherweight ad Sporter models and the Browning X-Bolt, and add the Ruger Hawkeye and CZ 550 to that list. They should all be in that price range and they're all well-built guns. To me, the Featherweight in .243 just seems right, and it's a pretty gun to boot.
