I started this project 10 years ago. I bought a stainless Rem 700 action with no magazine, trigger or trigger guard - and no bolt. I have a bolt in another rifle that could be shared. Can't shoot both at the same time, so why not?

It came with an almost new 300 Ultra Mag barrel. This is a medium weight, fluted barrel. My plan was to cut off 2" and chamber it as a 308, or 30-06 or a 30-284.

I also got a Hogue stock for it. I like the stock. Seems well made.

I think maybe I never got around to finishing the project because the action is engraved, and I am not partial to engraved guns

I would have sold it years ago if I thought anyone wanted a stainless Rem 700 action with no bolt.

My wife thinks the stainless fluted barrel would make an excellent all-weather tomato stake.

Anyone got a better idea?

as a project i think your done. not sure you could cut off enough barrel as the ultra mag is too large in diameter. engraving i think you will have to live with. maybe sell to me real cheap as i like large mags. then i could keep it for years unfinished as a project. all my current projects are coming to an end.

Like the others have said, the RUM chamber is pretty big to cut back unless the chamber is almost removed...then you'll probably run into shank size and barrel length issues. The parts that are missing are,..or were,..worth more than the reciever itself.

I like the engraved BDL SS's, I wish they still made them. I think you have the makings of a nice .338-06, just swap that houge for a CDL stock.... ;)

Would those engravings not be covered by scope mounts? A large rail, an anticant level on the rail, engravings no longer visible.

Or Amphibious will pay shipping for the receiver, I'll pay shipping for the stock, and wife gets tomato stake for Christmas (maybe tie a ribbon on it).

If it is a factory Ultra Mag barreled action, the action can really only be used for Ultra Mags if you want the magazine to function. The bottoms of the actions are altered at the factory for these rounds...

:agree:

Can you flap disk and polish the engraving off? Just make it into a .300 Ultra Mag and let it sit in your gun cabinet...its either that or let the action sit in your cabinet...

Just checked my parts pile......
I have everything needed to make this one function......providing the bolt will headspace.....a 300RUM reamer may have to be acquired....

its already chambered in .300RUM...

I realize that but having the bolt headspace would be nice.......if the headspace is short by only a couple thou it can be taken off the lugs...chances are more so that it's long requiring the barel set back and the chamber run in deeper. If one isn't fussy about flutes and stamping indexing it can have the shoulder , the breech end and the counter bore depth faced back to get headspace if it is long...this can be done without a reamer.

I wondered about the OP saying he had a bolt to use between two guns. What are the chances of the headspace being OK without mods?
