So I am fairly new to this precision shooting, I picked up a 700 SPS DM chambered in .300 WM. I know its expensive but for where I would like to end up in time and my love for bigger and badder bullets, I cudnt help myself.

So my delema / Questions are.

I need Optics, I want to be able to buy one optic that will shoot from 100YRDS to 1000YRDS in time as I progress. I have been told since I am using Win Mag rounds I need an Optics that will stand up to the recoil as some optics cant stand up to the 300 WM. I am thinking I want to stay with in $1000.00 range with tactical knobs for sure, I just have very little knowledge of Optics.

Any suggestions on Optics for that range and durability?

2nd I was told to buy a minimum 20 to 25 MOA rail for my Optics? Is this true, I almost bought a 40 MOA but read that they are more for the .50 cal setups?

I know there will be a huge difference in Opinions, but I am sure the combined knowledge of the CGN I will find something that works for me.

And I really want a bad@$$ stock if any have some ideas for that as well would be very much appreciated.

Thanks folks.

I run a vortex pst and it has stood up to my 300wm so far. Good rings and a 20 moa rail are good. The more moa your base has the more adjustability you get from your turrets: 0moa base means on a scope with 60 minutes of adjustment means you only get 30 minutes once you are zeroed. 20 moa means you get about 40 or maybe more. Not sure on the exact. I run a 20 moa base for LR stuff.

So I would get more out of a 40 MOA? But would I still be ok for 100 yrds? I was thinking of Vortex, I hear Leopold has a warrenty center in Okotoks. As long as I dont buy from bass pro.

loading 200 gr accubounds or vld, you have more than enough with a 20 moa base
to be honest, viper pst might do the job, but a premier light tactical is an other class
over twice the price, but is worth it

you might also give a look to the weaver tactical serie and sightron III

Nightforce nxs or leupold tacticals are the excellent; excellent costs money. When I bought my vortex I compared it with the sightron and the vortex seemed brighter, to me anyway. I've heard sightron's are great too though. Not sure on the 40 moa base. I've used my 20 moa base to 900m with a 308 no prob. The new berger 230's look great too

My own long range .300 has a 6.5-20 Mark 4 on it. It cost a little more than your $1000, but not that much more. With its ample internal adjustments it doesn't need a rail to make 1000 with a .300. That's a few bucks that you can put toward your scope. Rails mount the scope higher and that leads to needing an adjustable cheek-piece. You may want it anyway, but anything you don't have to buy can be put toward your scope. Look at the specs for the scopes you consider. That should tell you which rail you need, if any.

Lot of good suggestions, but If you have the budget look at the Schmidt and Bender PM-II series..............top shelf optics don't come cheap.... ;)

I used to own nothing but Leupold MK4 scopes........but after I looked through a buddies S&B the Leupolds just didn't cut it.......... sold a couple of them off for a S&B 5 - 25 X 56mm PM-II..........;)
