Looking for my first target rifle, what one is best bang for the buck? Not looking to do any mods to it? Anyone try both?

Both are great guns! Personally if your not going to touch it and leave it how you get it the Savage probably has the edge as the 700sps Tactical hogue stock is pretty crappy. I personally own an SPS tactical and love it... great little gun but I changed out the stock as soon as I could for an HS Precision take off from a 700P... what a world of difference that was!

Both are great shooters! If you can go to a local gun shop and handle both (If they have them) and go from there. No matter how many pictures you look at and articles you read nothing will beat actually seeing and handling them in person.

I have owned numerous models from both manufacturers.
They will both perform...unless you are unfortunate enough to get the odd lemon that both can produce.
Both can later be modified...although there are less 'bits' available for the Savage.
My advise would be to get one of each...in different calibres...and you'll typically then discover if you are a Remington or a Savage "guy"...
I happen to be both!

^^^ +1

I have an SPS Tactical in .223 that I restocked with an LTR takeoff, and a 10PC in .308 that is completely stock. While the Accustock does leave something to be desired, I think it is a better stock out of the box than the Hogue. Also, I find the detacheable mag on the Savage to be more useful than the floorplate on the SPS. The Accutrigger is easy to adjust, but I had my gunsmith tweak the trigger on the SPS when he bedded it. Now they are pretty much a tossup.

I just got around to starting load development for both last week, and the average for the best 9 3-shot groups betwen the 2 rifles was .482", so both rifles should shoot if you get a decent factory tube. Next trip will be to try 5-shot groups with the best performing loads and see what's what.

Definitely more aftermarket stuff available for the Rem, but all the SPS really needs is a better stock.

Would I be better off saving up money and buying either a 5r or a 10fcp hs? These are almost double the money is it worth it?

I would pick the Savage 10PC personally. It offers a lot of gun for the money. I don't like the stock or finish on the SPS.
As far as the 5r or the 10fcp, the only way I would think they would be worth it is if you wanted a better stock and finish. They won't shoot any better or worse.

I think the 5R uses a different stock than the 700P, which in my opinion is a good thing. I really don't like the palm swell or pistol grip angle of the stock on the 700P. I had a 700P takeoff on my SPS Tactical and hated it so that's why it now has the LTR stock. The stock on the 10FCP HS seems to fit a large number of users. In any case, I think you are looking at rifles that suit 2 different purposes. The SPS Tactical/10PC are handier due to their 20" barrels and compact stocks. The 5R/10FCP have longer tubes that give you more velocity, but are bulkier and heavier. For me, the shorter rifle trumped the velocity. YMMV.
