This started as a factory 700P 338 LM that made me a believer in the 338 Lapua Mag - incredible ! After a custom rebuild, it is now what I think Remington should have released in the first place, if only ! It's not a a custom action, but it's what I had and as it sits I am sure it will hang with any. Now to stretch it out and see what we can do...

Specs:

Remington 700P MLR action, squared and trued.
28 3/4" PacNor Super Match SS Barrel, Sendero Contour
Holland Muzzle Brake and Competion pinned recoil lug
HS Precision bottom metal and detach mag
TPS 20 MOA base and rings
NF NXS 5.5-22x 50 NPR1
McMillan A5
'smithed by Dennis R. Sorensen aka 'Guntech'

Not sure if I saved anything going the 700P route rather than starting with a custom action, but it's what I had and as it sits I am sure it will hang with any. Very nice rig, May I ask where you get the stock from?

Do you notice any difference with the recoil now that you have a decent brake? There's lots of talk that the brake on the OEM pipe is poorly designed. BTW, it looks like Dennis knows what he's doing.....nice job and congrats!

The barrel is 1-10" twist, and will be shooting 250-300 grainers; we'll see what it likes.

The A5 came from a private sale.

The HS Precision mag kit came with the factory 700P rifle

The factory muzzle brake mitigated recoil very well - a bit more than a .308 Win when pushing the 250's. I imagine it will now be a pussy cat to shoot with the new brake and extra heft.

I am looking forward to getting it out, but I have to some test handloads to prepare with 250 Scenars, 250 Accubonds and 300 SMK's, and RL 25, Retumbo and maybe US 869 and H1000.

I also need to wait for the -20C to go away. Range report to follow, rest assured !

Nice build! What does she come in at for weight? My .338 is ~17 lbs (I need to recheck the weight) scoped/empty. I haven't fired mine yet but I am expecting a mild amount of recoil with the MB.

Nice!!!!

Looks great paul.... I love the marbled stock..... It'll be interesting to see which pills it prefers..... BTW did you AI it??? Otherwise congrats on the rig.....

Aren't ya glad we met up at the range !!!!!!

Hey, after we chatted, i changed my mind on the A5 for the 260AI we were talking about..... I think I will go with the ultralite weight hunter from mcmillan....... Hope to come in under 7lbs.....

Merry Xmas buddy, see ya after Xmas to check out the rig!!!!!:wave:

R and G4E, At 15 lbs, I don't think anyone will be packing this one up any sheep range, much less old 'grey bush.' Though I do have a few spots in mind where this rig will shine, just not in the mountains.

Brad, No, I did not AI it, for a few reasons. First and foremost, this is a hunting rig that will spend much of it's time in the dusty Alberta prairies, and I don't want potential extraction problems that can occur with the AI's in a dirty or fouled chamber. Second, given the factory action and M14-type extractor, I feel more comfortable keeping the pressures at standard LM levels. And third, I have read about short barrel life on the 338 AI's, but this is neither here nor there, as many variables play into that. Nevertheless, I am looking forward to shooting it side by side with your AI to compare the two at long range (Summerland ?) ;)

Short barrel life on a 338 L AI ?.....Maybe on some but definitely not on mine. Its got over 1700 rds. down the pipe and still 1/4 MOA .. good enough for me...still looks great thru a borescope . :)

That's good to hear. Like I said, many variables must be factored into barrel life. I may very well go AI on the next barrel.

This conversation has been going on too long without a range report!

Great looking rig, I agree with not AI'ing. More than enough whack with the standard case and no fire forming.
