The 5R is stainless, and I believe the stocks have a slightly different profile. Other than that they're about even. 5R's have a reputation for shooting really well and mine hasn't dissapointed. :)

from what i've read and researched there is no advantage to the 5r as far as accuracy is concerned...period!!!!!!!!!!

I have a 700P in 308 and it has not disappointed me at all. Very happy with it. Try them both see how they fit you and buy the one you like you wont be disappointed no matter which way you go.

A few minor differences:

R5 = Stainless + 700P not
Slight 1/4" diff in grip ( R5 being shorter ) - 700P feels a bit better in my hands but YMMV
R5 = 24" tube + 700P = 26"

Personal pref = R5 notwithstanding the fact that the stock of 700P felt a tad better in my paws.

Both good factory rifles with potential for build or use as is. R5's seem to be solid .75 MOA rifles with some doing better but not many doing worse.

5R's are simply rejected M25 barrels slapped onto a regular 700 action and a two tone stock. Better off buying a SPS and Shilen barrel IMHO.

why are they rejected? My 5r 300 mag has a 26" 5r barrel whereas the M25 is only 24". Are they all 30 cal 5r barrel blanks? Then sorted as blanks or finished at different lengths and chambered then sorted??

There's a lot of speculation on that one. They currently make their own run now of barrels. Perhaps the first batch of 5R rifles were from M24 but that is only a maybe. I'm pretty sure it hasn't been that way since the first few released. I believe they make them specifically for a 5R run now. Some of the rumours also say they are put together in the custom shop although they are not "custom" rifles. I've heard some reports of people who have had the actions trued and they were very close to perfect right out of the box.

many of us have found them to be sub .5 moa rifles right out of the box with no changes required, or if you wish only the trigger lowered. I've shot a number of 5R rifles and with Federal Gold 168 ammo and had sub .5 moa with a few being sub .4 moa rifles out of the box without reloading. I haven't tried 175 yet but It wouldn't surprise me if this worked even better, especially with reloading.

The 5R is bead blasted stainless in a HS stock with the aluminum bedding block. It has a thicker palm swell which I like since it makes it easier to bring the trigger straight back and helps eliminate any left or right movement. Not all will like this. It has the 1:11.25 twist rate which I love. My DND AR10 DM rifle also has this twist rate in a 24" barrel. It's my favourite for .308.

Personally I prefer the 5R over the other Remington 700 rifles. I like the bead blasted stainless finish, I like the 24" barrel length, like the twist rate over the 1:12 or 1:10 and even 1:11 of the Tika rifles. The stock fits me like a glove, and the darn things just shoot. I also happen to like their looks along with the fit/finish.

I once told a gunsmith about these rifles up in the Peace Region area when I was up there. I got the old look, oh ya sure a factory rifle they're all the same blah blah. I could see it. He puts together custom or semi custom rifles for a living. I went back a few years ago. His father gave him a 5R that he wasn't using. He went out and shot it. His results were the same as mine with these rifles. He bedded it, worked on the trigger and made sure it was trued/blue printed. His comments. You're basically getting a custom barrel for free.

If you get one of these rifles. Use a torque screwdriver and set between 55-65. Your choice. 65 is the overall recommended however having equal torque seems to be more important than the actual setting after 55. Put on a good scope with good rings/bases. Make sure this is all torqued to spec. Then sight in with 165 Federal Fusion. Click one up on the scope and go to Federal 168 Gold. Now come back and tell me how the rifles are all the same.

I have no issues with the police model. I just prefer the 24" barrel for handiness and I'm not really a huge fan of the 1:12 twist, along with the parkarizing. I find the finish on those gets dinged up pretty easy. If the 5R didn't exist the 700P would be my choice. Who knows maybe I'll get one later on anyways. There's also the 700p LTR with a 20" fluted barrel that's considered to be very accurate. Of course there is the newer XCR tactical as well which is coated stainless and similar to the P and 5R offerings. The SPS tactical AAC also holds my interest although the twist rate again not my favourite at 1:10. Lots of choices along with Savage, Tikka and more expensive rifles.

I have one in the same stock only with tan/black webbing from a VSF. It looks pretty cool in Tan with the bead blasted stainless. Sorry I don't have pics around of it yet.

I think the main advantages are the finish, barrel length and twist rate. The 5R is a nice touch since it may increase velocity marginally and reduce deformation of the bullet. Whether it's noticeable or not I don't know. Also how it shoots factory target ammo is worth a mention. For those who don't reload or even those who do it's nice to have a rifle where you can put off the shelf ammo through it and still put in excellent results.

I read a review on Sniper Central regarding these rifles which actually ticked me off. I generally liked the reviews from this site. I suspect Mel caught himself on already speculating/making his opinions known and whether on purpose or not ended up skewing his review to reflect that opinion.

For a start on that review. Everyone who buys a 5R has probably combed over all the reviews etc. I know I did. The first thing they all say is 168 Federal Gold seems to be the best and will give you sub .5 moa. Yet his review doesn't focus much on that round at all with the 5R. He spends only a little time, and we don't get to see all the goups. Although the best group on his chart for that round was listed as .490. Secondly the targets he shot with aren't suitable for accuracy testing. They are fine for general target shooting but not for groups. Third in his reviews he credits the Tikka T3 for it's accuracy yet the 5R outshoots it in his review, even when using inferior targets for accuracy testing (the ones in the Tikka review weren't perfect but were better). Yet he says the 5R shoots like regular factory rifles do . Needless to say I didn't really feel that review gave the rifle a fair shake. Even then it still performed very well despite the handicaps.

They are not rejected barrels. They are made for and distributed by AcuSport. That is why they are limited and only certain dealers stock them.

The 5R has the advantage only if you like 700's, prefer stainless steel, and want a faster twist. It is easily refinished and the barrel will be a pleasure to shoot out.

The XCR's may be an option, but keep in mind they have the 12 twist and normally a higher tag due to the TriNyte finish. If a person wants to have work done to the rifle it will need to be refinished afterwards. Maybe want a different colour too? What's the point in paying for TriNyte than stripping or covering it up? Back to the 5R.

It really comes down to what the shooter intends to do with the rifle. If stainless isn't a priority get an SPS variant and spend the extra cash on ammunition. There are many excellent rifles built on SPS's.

Be careful torquing any OEM Rem 700 to anything over 45inch/lbs. While the receiver, screws, and any aluminum pillar/block stock would be fine, the OEM floorplate has on occasion cracked. This is the reason Remington only torques them to 45inch/lbs. This information is readily available in Remington's FAQ. Many people do up the torque on their Remington's and get away with it, but be aware of the potential consequences.

I agree about the SC review Epxoy7. I think in trying to avoid all the hype and myth surrounding this rifle, Mel sabotaged his own review.

I'll add, that I've had two 5R's, but contrarily, both have preferred heavier bullets. I reload though. They both prefer 178 AMAX's. One of them loved 180SST's out to 300 yards.

The 5R definitely has a dedicated following and a solid reputation. This can also be said about the LTR. Remington definitely did something right when they put these two rifles into production.

so from everything ive gathered from everyone on this site i believe this will be my next build please feel free to add suggestions

r700 5r
bushnell 6500 4.5-30
rings bases not decided yet
bell and carlson tactical medalist
muzzle brake again not sure on which one
trigger job
and a detachable mag kit most likely hs with a 10 rnd

after all that the whole unit will most like get a custom camo finish

My only suggestion would be to go with a DBM of the AICS variety. When I was looking into DBM's I found that the HSP system seemed cheaper initially (cost and no smithing) but ended up being the same or more due to the cost of extra magazines (if you can even find them). AICS are cheaper, readily available, and exchangeable with most people. Mind you, I looked into this awhile back, so the market may have changed.

I will add that HSP apparently upgraded their DBM system and from what I've read it is much more reliable than the old.

If you are going to spend money on the trigger, I'd just buy a Timney instead of paying a smith to frig with the OEM part.

why are they rejected? My 5r 300 mag has a 26" 5r barrel whereas the M25 is only 24". Are they all 30 cal 5r barrel blanks? Then sorted as blanks or finished at different lengths and chambered then sorted??

Whoa....back up the bus......300 mag??? When and where did you get one, looked like mad last year to no avail :D
