700p vs 700 milspec

For something that retails for what ? $1300 or so, the R5 is a good buy - I had one a few years ago and sold it to fund something else. AS I have previously said, mine was a solid .75 rifle and remains so to this day ( sold it to a buddy - he still uses it and likes it ). In my view, it could do with a DBM ( my preference on rifles of this type ) but that isn't a real biggie.

Of the various factory rifles out there the R's seem more consistent than some - I haven't heard of a lemon R5 -others, including of the Big Green offerings. Is it a TRG - no way but it's a different beast and a third of the price.

Big plus for the R5 in my view is that it can do triple duty : you could use it as an entry level F-Class rifle and not be embarrassed; add a DBM and it is a viable Tac-Rifle match competitor and it is not too stupidly heavily to preclude taking on a hunt.

My only suggestion would be to go with a DBM of the AICS variety. When I was looking into DBM's I found that the HSP system seemed cheaper initially (cost and no smithing) but ended up being the same or more due to the cost of extra magazines (if you can even find them). AICS are cheaper, readily available, and exchangeable with most people. Mind you, I looked into this awhile back, so the market may have changed.

I will add that HSP apparently upgraded their DBM system and from what I've read it is much more reliable than the old.

If you are going to spend money on the trigger, I'd just buy a Timney instead of paying a smith to frig with the OEM part.

yea i plan on just buying a drop in trigger but as far as the dbm goes where would i get one that takes aics mags

Whoa....back up the bus......300 mag??? When and where did you get one, looked like mad last year to no avail :D

It came new out of the US six months ago, there appeared to be quite a few around then, and none available here for some reason.??

Badger Ordnance M5- The original. Expensive, but Badger has excellent customer service. I’ve used it multiple times. They have readily fixed my mistakes!

CDI- Cheap. Some complain of issues with the finish.

VBull- Bigger and heavier than most.

Also: Surgeon, Seekins, APA, and a million other US manufacturers.

There's also BC Tactical on here, his prices are reasonable too. When it comes down to it detach mags are nice, but not really a must have.

so from everything ive gathered from everyone on this site i believe this will be my next build please feel free to add suggestions

r700 5r
bushnell 6500 4.5-30
rings bases not decided yet
bell and carlson tactical medalist
muzzle brake again not sure on which one
trigger job
and a detachable mag kit most likely hs with a 10 rnd

after all that the whole unit will most like get a custom camo finish

The Bushnell only has 50moa adjustment range which doesn't help when you're trying to push it out further. I have a Nikon Tactical that has 80moa.

The Medalist stock is nice no doubt, I bolted one on for a day :), but it is quite a lot more stock and somewhat detracts from the untility of the 5R. If you intend hoofing it around don't bother.

Muzzle break is nice as is the detach mag kit, but neither are must haves.

The stock trigger can be adjusted nicely, Jewel would be top shelf, but there's a lot of guys shooting tuned stock triggers that do just fine.

mainly want the bushnell for the really wide power range but im sure theres other scopes that have a wide power range ill have to do some more research tonight any recommendations?

Power is a double edged sword. The more you dial it up the less clarity you'll get, you can resolve more detail at a lower power setting than having it dialed up. Idealy you're looking for an exit pupil around 4mm (objective diameter divided by power). With a 30x50 your exit pupil is 1.7mm, very hard for the eye to make out detail like that, also more power=bigger objective=more clumsy. Magnification doesn't bring with it greater accuracy either, plus it's harder to deal with mirage on high magnification. Cheap scopes and high magnification aren't a good combo. Marines did well for years with 10x scopes. With a .308 out to 800meters 10x is all you need.

Gunslingers points are valid and should be seriously considered. High magnification demands quality lenses. Prices rise quickly.

I’m a big Nightforce fan. The 50mm NXS offers a lot for the price. I personally think it is the best buy when considering features, durability, and reliability. You can pay more, but you won’t necessarily get more.

I owned a Sightron and was very happy with it. Upgraded to the NF because I wanted features that the Sightron did not have at the time.

Ziess makes a very impressive and affordable scope: The Conquest. The 44mm variables are great light weight scopes.

Vortex is pretty popular now.

Leupold has a wide selection, but depending on the model I think Nightforce offers more for the money.

Again it really depends what you want. If you list the features you would like or what you plan on using the scope for it would help.

Target?
Get a heavy stock- your BC choice will probably be fine.
Look at the Sightron SIII's. A lot of scope for the money. Better glass and warrenty than Bushnell.

my old computor has bing for a search engine and I got a couple of reports on the 308 but nothing on the 223, maybe I need to refine my questions for the search engine, I just plugged in "5r miilspec"

also on the sponsor site, frontier the printout says n/a for twist rate, and when I called they said they could check for me (which was nice but I thought someone could answer here)

so yes a search engine was tried and phone calls were made ,

thnbks again

thanks Jeff

Try 5R milspec 223. My second listing showed the twist rate.
