Looking for a new .308 to get into some precision shooting. Had an sps tactical in .223 that was very accurate (purchased from someone on gunnutz) sold it to get into a .308. What are the arguments for and against each of these rifles? As far as precision shooting, it will be 500 yards and less, just like to make my groups nice and tight. Anyway, any info from you great shooters is appreciated. Also, any other options in this price range? Gun shop guy was mentioning Vangard s2?

either can be a great platform to build from, i personally like the rem700 action to start with, then get a good trigger and aftermarket barrel, bed the action to the stock and get er rolling.

I got a Rem 700P from Wolverines and out of the box with a Sightron SIII 6-24 LRMOA I'm avg sub - 1 MOA.
That was also the first time shooting out to 800M. I have nothing done to it except I reduced the trigger pull to 2.5 lbs.

I just plan on shooting it for now...

I find to get good cheap trigger time on it just use some surplus 7.62. I was using PPC 92 steele FMJ.
Used around 200 rounds to get used to the trigger better before moving to Match ammo.

Either way you go, just practice with it and see how it shoots. I could honestly be happy not doing anything to mine with 1 MOA @ 800M

I have nothing for Savage as I've never owned any, just my thoughts and findings on my 700P

At one time I had both a .308 700p and a .223 Savage 10fp.

For punching paper I found the .223 more than adequate.
Flatter shooting and with heavier bullets it serves well.
Compare the trajectory of the .308 to the .223 and see.

Also... if you plan on shooting a lot...
.223 costs half of what .308 does to reload

eeeny meeny... they both work.

In factory form, hit and miss like any bulk manf product. Savages have been offering better rigs on average but they keep changing their parameters making aftermarket support a bit confusing these days.

If you want to DIY, Savage is king... well, with the right models.

If you want huge aftermarket support, Rem is king.

They can both be made into superb shooting rigs.

Great info guys, that was my opinion as well kind of a chevy vs. ford thing. I plan on shooting a .308, just because I've always wanted one, but never had one yet. There is some pretty fair deals on here both rem 700 and savage. So I guess I just better make up my mind

In my experience Savage rifles shoot better out of the box. This isn't saying Remington rifles don't shoot good, just not quite as good. Do some searching around other forums, there are tons of info on both.

I guess it is kind of a chevy vs. ford argument, but I would say Savage is a little more like a dodge - lmao. Anyways before this thread gets off topic, I bought the Savage Model 10. Accu-stock (already with aluminum bedding block), accu-trigger, threaded muzzle on a heavy barrel, some of those things that I think you would still need to do to a factory Remington. Go with Savage you won't be dissapointed, at least is my two cents.

I was leaning towards the Savage because everyone I know who has one likes the out of the box accuracy. I don't have the funds to spend a bunch right away on barrels, bedding blocks, triggers etc. Hoping to buy a good quality optic, and shoot reasonably well. Still, going back to my old SPS Tactical in .223, shot very well out of the box, and even better with a jewel trigger. ARGGGGGHHHH, six of one, half dozen of the other!

I have had the savage model 10 fcp hs precision in .308 and loved it! I found my best load was 178 amax with varget, I am now shooting a model 12 LRPV in 22-250 and again, I absolutely love it! Put my Nikon monarch 6-24 on it and I did the savage barrel break in procedure (just to give it every chance it can get at being accurate, not sure if it's true or not) and it shot well with factory ammo but very very well with my hand loads.. Bottom line.. I'm a savage lover for life now..

the 223 coulda got the job done up to 500 ! I have a vanguard s2 in 300 Win Mag. Great rifle, I think it would be even better in 308 because there is no break, the 300 WM kicks like a mule. It is extremely well priced for what it can do. Mind you, you cant turn it into a scary tactical rifle. Very limited in stocks and fun things for it. If you like the look and feel of the V2 there is no need to change it anyways. Slapped a bipod on mine and a half decent scope and I've shot out to 1000 with it. Does the trick but im already looking for something a bit more customizable.

Well, purchased a Remington 5R in .308 on the EE here. Just waiting for it to get here, came with a decent scope similar to my .223, looking forward to some range time!

I guess it depends if you want to be nitpicky or not. One thing that I do find annoying is the crappy factory knobs offered on both the Savage and the 700. The Savage is simply removed with removing the rear Hex Bolt. The 700, not so much.
