i just sold my 700p in 308 and i am looking at grabbing a m1a to start precision shooting with what kinda performance loss am i looking at if i go with a springfield

Incalculable loss. So bad in fact, you might be interested in buying a Savage instead. 1/10 the cost and just as accurate...;)

You really can not compare a precision rifle with a battle rifle when it comes to accuracy.
To me poor accuracy with a bolt rifle is anything over 1/2 moa but great accuracy with an M1A IS 1/2 moa. I have not seen many M1As that shoot much better than 1/2 moa, the rifle was not designed to be super accurate, just extremely reliable in truly ####ty conditions, with good knock down power.

Bigdawg I have seen M1A's get 3/8 moa but these were not the lower grade guns but rather heavily modified M1A's IE: heavier barrel , Composite stock ,Trigger work and a host of other mods if you are looking at getting a Dealer manufactured M1A that is accurate the Springfield Armory M25 Whitefeather http://www.springfield-armory.com/armory.php?version=39 these rifles will get about between 1MOA to 1/2 MOA depends a lot the ammo and the shooter so it is in the same ballpark as a Remington 700 as accuracy goes but at almost 3x the price

For you to get similar accuracy from a M1A/M14 type rifle you will have to spend BIG dollars and LOTS of time tuning the rifle and tuning loads for it.

I have had several M14 types that would shoot just as good or better then then ANY bolt gun (Yes, any bolt gun).Hungry built the first decent M14 I owned and that was a true sub 0.5 MOA rifle. The next one I built and it was a sub 1 MOA gun.

You are looking at spending upwards of $3000.00 PLUS the cost of the M1A to get back where you were with the 700P..............

Want bolt gun accuracy..............but another bolt gun.............

Exactly what Skullboy said. And yes, I do miss that M14 I built and sold to Skullboy. That czcksucker could outshoot any custom Sproingfield Armory from Geneseo. Back then USGI parts sold for a lot cheaper: Bolts $ 35 Cdn, Gas cylinders complete $ 35, Barrels $ 100, Trigger groups $ 35, Op rods $ 25, I'm not shzttin' ya !! LOL

Okay back to the question of M1A versus M700P... by the way, I own 4 of the M700s in various configurations...

Enjoy the commentary and save your money !! Buy a bolt gun with a great barrel if you want long range accuracy.

If you want to shoot an M-14 for precision, forget the Springfield & buy a Norinco M-14S and use it as the basis for your build. The Norinco is a mil-spec forged receiver vs. the Springfield cast, out-of-spec receivers. You'll want to pick up a new USGI bolt, gas system, new aftermarket, high quality barrel and $3000.00 later you'll have a sub-MOA rifle. Better than dropping $2500.00 for the M1A and then spending that extra $3000.00 to get it shooting as good as the Norinco!:)
