708s and Hunting use?

+3 seems too high for me at that 120-150 range which im too often encountering, perhaps i should try it sometime but for now +2 seems handy!

Thats my choice for all the medium trajectory rounds. Because it works for most big games at the most commonly shot distances. - dan

Would you use this for Whitetails?

i think if the 'mid range' was a bit more out there, than in here, over in southeast Aus, then a +3 could be ideal, perhaps it is out in the West, where a normal shot is often out there.

its not big deal but these Deer cartridges of mine have taken quite a few Small Dogs in their time :) (wild dog) an im often shooting the small Fallow deer....

in the past on my 270 wincester Rem700- i tried the 3+ but during the fallow season at moderated ranges i was proberly aiming a little more in favour of some drop, an id often shoot over or spine the critter in the mid range--

Agree that with the Big Sambar it might be a go-er for say my 30-06 @2500 with the 180gr load---- In fact i have to Re sight that in Today with the 180gr load cos im out of Woodleigh 150s....

Il see how it looks on Paper an let yas know!!

Brno 304 7x57r, 175gn nos Hornady rn, 48gn of RL19, fed 210 primer, +- 2450fps, bullet seated out to a coal of 3.171ish all of than one Norma brass! Set at 2” above at 100m! The groups are not fantastic, 2” for a 4 shot group with a cold barrel with an old Zeiss fix 4x German 1 reticle(heavy)… and a far from being great trigger lol! Anyway carried it this year for moose along my Ruger no1 9.3x62, I used it for bush walk where chances are moose would be inside 100m! I need to play with steering depth maybe I can get the groups tighter…

I also have a new to me Ruger no1 RSI 7x57 that I didn’t have time to play with yet! I would like to have that one loaded with lighter bullets and quite a bit faster velocity for caribou and sheep! If anyone have that rifle and want to share there success story regard reloads please pm me!
ha ha this is me everyday man---

an nice one with rSI

Yes. White tails, mulies. You have a little more leeway if you primarily are after elk and moose. I recall an article in a hunting magazine years back, might have been written by Boddngton, where they had measurements of the best zeroing heights for all the major rounds and bullet weights of the time. The majority were between 2 inches and 2 and a half inches. - dan

7mm-08: 140 gr AB over R19 is a bug holer. Factory Nosler with the same bullet performs exactly the same. Loads with 120 gr tsx's only slightly less consistent. 140's sighted 2" at 100 gives me 0 @ 200 and -7 at 300yrds. Deer and moose. Most game shots under 200 yrds. Basically point blank to 300. Deadly.

I've got my 7-08 setup with a very mild handload with H4895 and Nosler 120gr. Ballistic Tips (these are not a varmint bullet and in fact tougher than the 140gr. BTs). Sighted in about 1" high at 100 and about 4" low at 200. We hunt deer by doing drives in E. Ontario and shots are typically well under 100 yards, but my limit would be about 200y. I initially set this load up for my son, but I've shot 3 deer with it and have been very happy with the performance - about dime sized exits, almost no meat damage and very short/heavy blood trails (0-50yards).

I use a 280 Remington

140 gr HP 2,839 ft/s (865 m/s) 2,506 ft⋅lbf

A 7mm-08 140 grain bullet goes 2800 fps and has 2437 ft-lbf

I don't think peformance would be much different on medium size game animals.

POI at 100 yard is 1.8 inches.

Quarry is blacktail deer, mule deer and black bear.

I use 140 grain Federal Trophy Bonded Tip ammunition.

Average shot distance? 45 yards.

I know several folks around here that use 7-08 for deer, both mule deer and white tail. I know at least 2 black bears that were felled by one of those hunters as well.
A 7-08 is in my wife's future as well as she used her friend's rifle to take her first mulie a couple or so years ago now while they were out for girls hunting day.

Never had a 7-08, but have a 7x57 in a Ruger m77 mkII. The 7x57 has 1gr more water capacity to the case than 7-08, so in a modern rifle can be loaded identically.

Moderate range, excellent deer to perhaps elk round. If primary animal hunted was Elk/Moose, and I had a heavier caliber I would use that. Certainly adequate in a pinch. The 7-08/7x57 is also one of the answers as a caliber for small framed or recoil sensitive shooters.

that kimber montana of mine has been the best thing really. the fact NWS mentions of light framed an lower recoil absolutely suits the lightest Gun in the montana flavour!

i just wouldnt do a 30-06 comfortably, an think with anything over a 150gr .308 i'd be shy too.......

that is just me.... above described type ha ha.

im just not sure id be 'such' a fan of the Cartridge if we were talking "Ruger 1s"....... it seems too simple for a Ruger 1 etc.

that would be the key 757 moment
