708s and Hunting use?

For many years, knowledgeable riflemen hunting any/all specie of Canadian big game, sighted their rifles 2 to 2 1/2 inches high at 100 yards.
Excellent riflemen who used to go on month long horse packing, guided trips in the northern mountains, would have their rifle sighted three inches high at a hundred yards.

Since the subject was about 7-08 calibre rifles, I would highly recommend the 2 to 2 1/2 inch high at 100 yards for any north American big game hunting.
 
I cant seem to widdle myself away from buyin the federal power shok 150gr factorys when i am runnin low of Ammo.
All i need is Dies n i would be away although i cant seem to fit in load development and the riff raff that goes with it , until about june at this stage .

I also read that out of a 22 inch tube a well known (google search) Guru was gettin 2750fps!

My 'go to' rifle is a 65x55 swede,with 140 gr shells, pretty close ballistically to your 7.08 . Shot a lot of deer with it and a couple of black bear.Mostly one shot kills and nothing goes far. I like it because it's low recoil and very accurate( I tend to shoot low recoil rifles better )
 
On average , the most accurate with good velocity loads I have done in 7mm-08 is 140's at 2850-2890 ft/sec and 150's at 2750 ft/sec.There were safe loads faster but dropped off in accuracy slightly.Hunting and match bullets.

Never pressure issues and regardless of barrel length when the powder charge gave those velocities it always gave the best accuracy.

I have loaded 168gr to 2700+ but never got the accuracy I wanted.
 
I have used mine for moose and deer. I used 140 gr Partitions on both. The moose was over 300 yds and a muley at just under 300. Have not shot an elk yet but only because I haven't managed to see one while I had a tag. I really like it. Probably not going to take another long shot like I did with the moose but he was really nice and stood broadside for me. I'm not a hater of bigger calibers/cartridges but so far I haven't seen a need to get one.
 
Got my first 7-08 in the early 80's and my second one a few years ago....great little cartridge, taken all sorts of game up to moose with them.
 
several years later an many little White and Yellow boxes since the original days with the 150gr Federal factorys, Ive since moved on to the 140gr Woodleigh PPSN an have not really bothered using anything else- i dabbled with a 120gr sierra and some left over 162gr SST projectiles for some smaller game but my Go to is a 140gr an the chrono read 2640 or so an ive not had any issues to 350m on game :)

im roughly 2 inch high at 100m :)

2" high at 100. deer, moose, elk, wolf. Under 200 (though I did make one shot from a rest that paced out over 400). 140-154. Haven't hit it yet. - dan

Pretty much identical sighting for me - perhaps 20 years with Ruger No. 1A in 7x57 - I only used 150 Nosler Partition and RL-19 powder for hunting, without looking at notes, I think mostly Remington brass and Fed 210 primers - but I did try 140 and 160 Partitions early - convinced myself that the 150's "grouped better" - not really certain of that, now - was certainly "good enough" to pile up several dozen white tail and mule deer. I checked that loading on my Shooting Chrony several times over the years - load was given as Max in various Nosler manuals - I would get plus or minus 2,800 fps. Worked fine, I thought?

OP - I have not much clue how game weight compares Saskatchewan to Australia - two largest deer I ever got - both on same day, actually - carcasses hanging in garage around 200 pounds - so ready to cut up - no guts, hide, feet or head. One was White tail and one was Mule Deer - overlapping seasons that year in that zone.

Average shot distance was probably 200 yards/meters or less - more likely closer to 100 meters - I do recall one whitetail that I got - by far my longest shot at game - must have been close to 300 meters - was before we used range finders to know for sure.

Rhys, I have hunted a lot with the 7x57, and while I have a 7-08, I have not shot a
lot of game with it. I consider the two almost identical in performance.

I shoot mostly Nosler Partitions [140/150 grain] and have only shot a second time once.
I sight in +3" at 100 for a minimum compensation out to 350 meters. Dave.
 
One of my froends has a 708 M70 Featherweight that has acounted for more than 35 animals, among them deer moose and Elk.
He shoots 140 TTSX'S out of it and it is a great combination with a S&B 6X on top.

My 7mm-08 is a rebarreled Winchester Model 88 w/ 20" barrel, w/ Leupold VX-3 2.5-8 w/ B&C reticle sighted in for 200 yard zero with the factory Nosler 140 gr AccuBond @ 2825? fps (have not chronied to verify yet, but on the box ballistics; 1.7" high at 100 yards, down 5.4" at 300 yards and still packing over 1650 ft.lbs of energy).
My wife's 7mm-08 is a Steyr Mountain Classic w/ 20" barrel, / Leupold VX-3 2.5-8 w/ B&C reticles, sighted in for 200 yards with handloaded 140 gr Sierra Pro Hunters (sorry do not have ballistics written down where I can find at the moment).
Game targeted with these rifles includes: deer, black bear, caribou, moose, out to 300 yards, and elk, out to 200 yards (while an unwary elk at 300 may be fine, I prefer more energy for this tougher, heavier boned animal). Hope to add fallow deer to this list next year! (for the wife)
 
7mm-08 with 140 gr AB, Nosler brass and Ramshot Big Game is a great load.

Out to 300 yards its more than capable for just about everything in N.A.
 
Brno 304 7x57r, 175gn nos Hornady rn, 48gn of RL19, fed 210 primer, +- 2450fps, bullet seated out to a coal of 3.171ish all of than one Norma brass! Set at 2” above at 100m! The groups are not fantastic, 2” for a 4 shot group with a cold barrel with an old Zeiss fix 4x German 1 reticle(heavy)… and a far from being great trigger lol! Anyway carried it this year for moose along my Ruger no1 9.3x62, I used it for bush walk where chances are moose would be inside 100m! I need to play with steering depth maybe I can get the groups tighter…

I also have a new to me Ruger no1 RSI 7x57 that I didn’t have time to play with yet! I would like to have that one loaded with lighter bullets and quite a bit faster velocity for caribou and sheep! If anyone have that rifle and want to share there success story regard reloads please pm me!
