I tried searching around without success...

What is the preferred oal of a .223 round loaded with a hornady 75grain amax? Can these be magazine fed into an AR, or is it single feed only with them?

Also, same questions, but with hornady's 75 grain bthp?

The 75 gr Amax can only be loaded so they single feed (no magazine length). Not sure on OAL as I've never used them. ( I think it is in the neighborhood of 2.450")

The 75gr. HPBT can be loaded to magazine length, but I'd load them out as far as you can (2.255" or 2.260"), as they are quite a long bullet.
24.5gr. to 25gr. of Varget is a good choice with the 75gr. HPBT.

My recent loading of 75gr AMax in the 223 tells me that using them in an AR mag will greatly reduce performance. Uses up way too much case capacity.

I have mine pushed out so that the boattail starts at the neck shoulder junction. I will have to measure but it is way longer then the mag in my Stevens 200.

For max velocity, you need all the case capacity you can get.

The shorter BTHP have been made to work given that they are in use in Iraq/Afghanistan.

Single feed is best.

I load the 75 Gr Amax for my Savage 12FVSS, with a COL of 2.510, which I think will exceed on an AR. I think you could load it shorter, but not sure why? This is a pretty slick bullet, BC of .435, your probably better to single load after tuning the load to the gun.

I use Varget and BL-C2, both around 24Gr, and they are both nice loads.

Ya, I thought so. That sucks, I just bought 500 of the amax before I thought it through. I'm not interested in single feeds for these. Thanks for the replies.

Look for them soon on an EE near you...
