Im out at the range with some 'IVI-South African and some Portugese' surplus the latter of the three will not fire out of my new rifle it dimples the primers and thats all.....Yet I dropped them in my 700P 20 seconds later and they go boom....What gives ????

Yes, sure could. Savage discontinued the short action because of complaints of a weak spring. That was 20 years ago. Yours has not got any stronger.

There is one other possibility. When you chamber and then inspect the rounds, does the Portugese have any rifling engraving? If so, this keeps the case shoulder off the chamber shoulder and acts as a bit of a cushion.

I have supplied military primer ammo to target shooters and misfires in rifles with some headspace and short throats were common.

One of the neat things about the Savage is that you can easily unscrew the firing pin assembly from the bolt body. No tools required. I use a Loonie.

When you examine the firign pin you can see that it can be scewed out to increase the firing pin protrusion. You could try turning it out one increment. Protrusion should be between 55 thou and 75 thou.
