Hey guys,
I've inherited a remmington 783 in 6.5. I've always wanted to do a build and was wondering if this rifle is good for a budget friendly build. If this is a good starter build any suggestions, or recommendations would be greatly appreciated

I put mine in a MDT chassis and added a CTR stock.
It was shooting sub MOA with 130 g eld-m .

The trigger is adjustable and it’s actually pretty good.

Hi, I had a 783 action that was used to build a 6mm Cr. The plastic stock they come with are throwaways. A MDT stock replaced that. The trigger, though ok, was replaced with a Timney. The barrel was replaced with an IBI 24 inch bull SS. I haven't shot much with it this year, but it handles Berger 107 (could be 108, forgot!) just fine. My range is only 300 yds so it is not showing what it can really do. No regrets using this action.
If you go to Mystic Precision, Jerry has a good write up about using this action.
Hope this helps you out.

Terry.

I have worked on some 783s. I wouldn't turn my nose up at one.
Can't see any reason not to use one for a project.

Don't know what the long term future is for 783s, though. Is the new Remington company going to put them back into production?

I have one in 6,5CM as well with the heavy barrel. Shoots great, trigger is actually pretty decent. .663 MOA with cheap Federal ammo. That's in the factory stock. Put it in a Oryx Chassis , didn't really like the feel. Good budget shooter for sure.

RemArms, the new company has 783 in their lineup.

Here's my 783 HB 16"/223 in MDT XRS. Very nice lil target rifle.

The one thing I'd like to see change on the 783 is the option to buy it in Stainless Steel in the hunting rifle version. :)

I have a 16.5inch barrel 783 in .308. Its a nice shooter, I had it in a MDT LSS chassis but I just didn't like the feel of using a buffer tube style stock and I couldn't get the grip to feel natural so now I'm back to the Tupperware stock (meh). I either need to work on the stock cause its noodle-ish, or find another more rigid stock for it. Other than the stock it came with, I really like the rifle, especially for the price.

The photo Gimpy Golden just posted has me thinking I might have just bought the wrong MDT chassis cause that XRS looks comfy. I might try that one.

I think only one MDT chassis will work on the 783.
I could be wrong though

Ahh , I had the lss, I didn’t notice the other two.
In any event, I liked the lss but anything is an improvement over the Original.

I had a 783 in .223 with the 16.5" barrel. factory stock sucked so I put it in an MDT LSS gen 2 and added a Herra arms linear compensator. After that it would keep 5 rounds of Sako 55 gr soft point under an inch if I did my part. I liked the action but not the short barrel.

The 783 is a very inexpensive rifle to start a build with. I used one for a .308 build, using a MDT XRS stock, IBI 24" barrel, MDT rings and 20 MOA base, topped off with A Vortex Viper 6-24 I had sitting around. I found the adjustable trigger to be excellent for a factory unit. I did recently install a larger bolt knob as I found the Remington one small (especially when wearing gloves). It's the most accurate .308 I have ever owned.

The 783 lollipop bolt knob begs for replacement.
It is very common for gunsmiths to use the PT&G jig for turning off and threading bolt handle shanks. This jig works well with the 783 bolt.

My 783 came with a threaded bolt knob from the factory. I was surprised. It unscrewed on my at the range. The triggers are pretty decent. I bought a Tinney and I don't think it is too much of an improvement. Put a JC sendero profile 6.5 creed into a bedded Boyd's heavy laminate stock. Shoots incredible. I am a bit concerned about parts though.
