hi iam wondering who all has a rem 788 is there alot of these guns left out there i believe they stopped production in the early 80's i bought one a couple weeks ago, just wondering what this gun should shoot and wondering what stocks would fit on this gun. iam wanting to geta different one or maybe make one. just lookinf for some info. and some help thanks guys.

Hi - You don't say what ctg your 'new to you' Rem 788 is in. I've had a couple of them over the years. One in .308 Win and one in .30-30 Win. Currently, still have one, a factory carbine in 7mm-08 with the 18 1/2" barrel. It's a favourite rifle of mine.
Mine came with a pretty beaten up factory plain wood stock. I swapped it out for an econo Ramline synthetic [back when the Ramlines came with a Pachmayr decelerator recoil pad installed ]. Anyway, my 788 action just dropped in without any fuss or fitting required. Barrel is floated from the action. Is an honest sub 1" 100 yard shooter just as is so I haven't done anything else to her. Scope is a matte Tasco World Class Plus 3-9x44mm. This little rifle is phenomenal considering the low $$ investment I have into it total.
The Rem 788 is a great rifle, too bad Rem discontinued it...

They are probably one of the most accurate and ugliest rifles Remington has ever made. Very tough, but also quite heavy. Hang on to it, it may not be a show queen, but as a hunting rifle, one of the better ones.
Kinda a cheapy feeling, plastic safety and mag button. Wimpy bolt handle. Short case life if you don't neck size.
But boy do they shoot! . . . Fast lock time, stiff action.

Have had one since 1979..308..18.5 inch tube...heavy..exceedingly accurate in all .30 bullet weights 90 gr. to 180 gr./handloads only...
haven't had any issues with case life as suggested .......some cases haveing over 25 max reloads through it.....
Have had the opportunity to shoot 788 's in 22-250...243 also and they were very accurate too...

Hi, I'll put in my 2 cents as well. I have owned every calibre that the 788 was ever chambered in at one time or another. Agreed they are not the prettiest rifle but they are all very accurate. My favorite that comes to mind is the .44 mag. It shot cloverleaf patterns with cheapie factory ammo.
My advise is hang on to it. I still have a couple left that I will never part with.
The value of your 788 depends on it's calibre. There are lots of .222, 22.250 .243 regular length barrel, 7mm-08 and .308's kicking around. The rarest are the .223, .243 carbine, 6mm, 30.30 and .44 magnum.

I've had two 788's...one was a mint 6mm about 6 years ago...traded it for a BSA in 222...the other was a 308 that had a pitted barrel and a nice Fajen walnut stock..a waste of nice wood I thought.....I tossed the barrel in the chip bin and reblued the action and sold the stock and action

sorry the cal is 22-250 and at 330yrds. on the weekend i shot a gong about a 1sq foot dimension, offhand 6 for 6 times with it topped with t a tasco 10-40-50mm love the rifle maybe looking for a different stock though someone did a poor varnish job and its all one big varnish run. thanks for the replys.

MPI, Brown, and Ramline all make stocks for them. I currently have 788s in 22-250, 223, 22-243 Middlestead, 6mm Rem, 6mm-284, and 7mm-08. All are good shooters. I found the brass resizing issues only when I fed them ragged edge handloads, as long as I stayed within factory ammo spec, it wasn't an issue. Timney now makes an adjustable trigger, although modifying the existing one isn't rocket science, and Canjar makes one as well (be prepared for a long wait to get one though). - dan

Remington produced these little Uglies with 2 barrels. The earlier had 22 inch while the later years were sent out with 18 inch barrels. A .243 with a 22 inch barrel works just fine on varmits, and white tail! Great working gun! Hang on to it!
They also had 24" barrels on the 22-250s, and some 6mm's, I'm told. - dan

thanks. There are probably lots of guys here that know as much as I do about the great 788. Here is a pic of my .223 restocked with a custom Boyd's stock. Very nice and very heavy, makes a nice platform that allows almost no recoil on the little .223.
