788 ejection problems

I'm hoping someone can give my rifle a diagnosis.

I have a Remington 788 in .222 that extracts just fine, but what appears to be happening is as soon as the case mouth clears the chamber, it angles right, hits the inside of the receiver and the brass is kicked off the bolt face before it can get properly ejected from the gun.

I've tried shortening the ejector spring- that sort of helped but it was now too weak to be reliable.
I got a replacement spring and it is back to consistently jamming with the empty casing sitting in the action.

This is a very accurate rifle, but I'm almost ready to give up on it

You shortened ejector spring to much, try again with more moderate cuts.
Other wise what you have left is to try retract the bolt a little bit faster.
That should cure the beast....

I had a 788 in 6mm which would not fully eject the brass, which ended up laying on top of the magazine follower no matter how fast or slowly I worked the bolt.
I took the ejector out, and with a very fine file, very slightly extended the recess for the ejector retainer pin, which allowed the ejector a little more forward movement.
That little bit of extra 'oomph' pushing the brass cured the problem on my rifle.
At that time I also bought a new replacement ejector spring and ejector retainer pin which I didn't use, and still have.
I don't know if all 788 ejector springs and retainer pins are the same for all calibres, but they're yours if you want them. Just PM me your name and address.
