How rare are these? I just made a trade with a friend for it. He said he had a hard time finding ammo, less than 2 boxes fired, there are some tiny rust spots on the barrel, it was put away wet and it comes off easy but doesn't show in any pics, rifle feels very nice on the shoulder for me but I am picking up a ruger m77 270 on Monday, I know the 270 is far better than 6mm but with shots at 300 yds would a 6mm do the job on deer?

If I'm not mistaken the main concern for a 6mm is the twist rate. They were originally made with slower twist rates that didn't stabilize 100gr bullets, which is the go-to for deer in the 243win. You might be able to drop to a 90gr and be ok, I don't like the sectional density of anything under 100gr unless it's a premium bullet though.
A 243 will drop a deer at 300, so depending on what bullets you can shoot the 6mm should be capable too. Personally I'd go with the 270 if I expected shots over 200 though.

I believe it was the 244 Remington that had the issues with the barrel twist ,, They revamped it /// changed the barrel twist and called it the 6mm but it was too late ,, the 243 Winchester had a big lead in sales by that time .. The 6mm is a 7x57 necked down too 24 caliber
Since those rifles use a single-stack magazine, the 243 mag will work just fine with the 6mm.
Your 788 has a 9-1/8" twist, and will stabilize any hunting flat based bullet up to and including
the 105 grain Speer.
These are generally very accurate rifles. My daughter had a left handed version. [yes, they made some]
and it was a real tack driver.
With a good 95 - 100 grain bullet, these will take deer at 300 without any issues. Placement is, of course,
paramount. If you find yours accurate, and you decide to keep it, you should consider reloading for it.

The 243 mag will not work with s 6mm the 6mm is based on the 7x57 Mauser case the shoulder is further ahead on the 6mm . It will not fit into the 243 mag . The crimp on the 243 mag is set further back .6mm 788 mags are scarce and exspensive be prepared to spend 100-150$ for one .

Ive got a Remington 788 in 6mm, and it shoots great. Shot my first sheep at 350ish yards no sweat. I understand the 788 was a budget gun, but they were known to be very accurate. 6mm > .243

As for bolt handles falling off, there is many threads on that matter. Many folks used there's for 30 or 40 years without issue, but apparently they're not quite as robust or built for hammering on as some of the other actions out there.
